Water Ready

All Astral shoes have a special relationship with water. Every component, from the thread to the laces are critically evaluated and chosen for its ability to hold up after constant soaking, to shed water, and not to accumulate funk. Many models have engineered drainage for water to come out while minimizing entry of silt.

Balanced Geometry

We believe that a foot’s position in a shoe should be similar to when barefoot. This allows excellent balance and biomechanically natural lifestyle.

Foot-beds are essentially level (only 1mm drop from heel to toe ) and provide medium arch support.  Tapered instep and heel area for better foothold and control. Wide forefoot allows your feet and toes to spread out for stability.

This G compound is formulated for premium grip while also providing "excellent" abrasion resistance. Its low durometer means the rubber is softer and therefore conforms well to the ground.

  • Favorite Shoes!!

    September 08, 2021

By far these shoes are the BEST combination of water shoes and sneakers that I've ever owned. I've put them through the wringer and know they'll be sturdy and comfortable from chemistry to swiftwater class. Still hoping that Astral will bring back the green, blue, and red colors!

  • Live up to the quick dry claims!

    June 25, 2021

Wore these on a weeklong wet foot canoe trip in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area in MN. Worn with wool or thin neoprene socks with repetitive soaking of the feet while landing and loading canoes, my feet were comfortable, shoes drained so well there was no squelching while portaging. Grippy soles made them great for portage trails, and they dried out overnight easily. They are my everyday summer hiking shoes as well and perform in that capacity equally well.

  • I prefer the TR1 Junction

    April 18, 2021

I have both the TR1 Mesh and the TR1 Junction. I like the Mesh, but I love the Junction. They're both severely comfortable shoes and are very similar to each other. The Mesh is, well, super meshy...and I thought that's what I would like about it, but when comparing it to the Junction, I found I prefer to have a liiiiiittle more structure in the top fabric of the toe box. I feel like my foot slides around in the Mesh; I really can't imagine hiking anything half-serious in these...that's why they made the Junction. I bought the Mesh for pavement exercise walking and dog walks, and they're fine for that. I also don't like the way the Mesh looks on my foot in comparison to the Junction. The Mesh looks long, slender, and pointy, while the Junction has some studier material that wraps up around the sides of the toe box that provides both structure and a nice shape to the shoe. Also, I've found the sizing in Astral shoes to be difficult. I'd say Ive mostly found I need to go up a half size. I just feel like the Junction is a more well-rounded, multi-purpose shoe than the Mesh. I really, really like the TR1 line, but the Junction has my obsession, not the Mesh.

  • 6 months later and need new shoes...

    January 04, 2021

I am not rough on my shoes by any means, yet my shoes have holes in them now. I havent put the amount of miles that is implied by the picture. I do normal everyday walking around. The soles of my shoes look amazing and are no where near being ready to throw out. I would like to say it's a fluke but my daughters shoes started getting holes on them before mine. She wears hers even less than I wear mine, granted she can be tougher on things than me. I actually lectured her on treating her shoes right when hers started getting holes on the top. I loved the shoes up until mine started ripping. Ugh.

  • Mt Kenya

    February 25, 2020

When a group member needed better boots on day two of our climb of Mt Kenya, I leant her mine and hiked the rest of the way in the TR1 Mesh shoes I had brought along as "camp shoes". I was already in love, but dang, these shoes crushed it. Rocky scrambles, multi-day pack, long days on my feet, and feeling comfy and light the whole way. Thanks y'all!

  • Astral Tri Mesh women shoes

    April 23, 2019

I purchased these for a white water rafting trip (6 day guided) in the Grand Canyon and they worked really well as far as grip, water shoes. I recently went back east to Washington DC and Pennsylvania and decided to take these shoes. Wow, I was blown away. I walked miles in these shoes in total comfort and the grip that the soles have were a godsend. These are now my go to shoes for any trip where I will be walking a lot and need shoes that are comfy and don't slip. These are amazing. Usually I have to break shoes in and get blisters, but not with these shoes. I encountered a situation where fellow travelers were slipping on slick conditions and these shoes prevented me totally from slipping. I am 100% blown away by these shoes and will take them everywhere I go.

  • love, love, love!!!

    March 27, 2019

I've always used Keens or Chacos for water sports until I found Astrals. They blow the others out of the water! :) Couldn't be happier with my purchase.

  • Have loved these from the minute I tried them on!

    January 03, 2019

I just received my second pair of these terrific shoes and already love them. After years of struggling on and off with plantar fasciitis, I opted for this low profile shoe with lots of toe room and flex, but still plenty of structure for long runs on roads or trails. The shoes snugly hold my feet in their natural shape, allowing plenty of movement, not forcing them around or into a more rigid form. The mesh is great for wet NC summers but also just fine for winter runs with good socks, even on snowy mountain trails. Another important feature for me is the lack of ornamental stitching across the toe area, allowing my toes maximum range of natural movement. These are excellent shoes.

    August 26, 2018

I walked 9 miles with these shoes the first day I got them and they were amazing! They are incredibly supportive, their grip is ridiculous, they're completely waterproof, they're vegan and environmentally-friendly, and they're adorable! I push carts at work (by hand, not with a machine) and on rainy days, my feet used to slip on the pavement. These shoes make me feel suction-cupped to wherever I plant my feet. Not to mention that if it spontaneously starts pouring, my feet stay BONE DRY (I wear synthetic socks and the water just flows out of the shoes). I'll also wear them through other parts of the building, standing on concrete for 8 hours, and my feet feel amazing. I'm honestly obsessed with these shoes and will gush about them to anyone who will listen. I'm ordering another pair right now.

  • review of the TRI Mesh W's

    March 25, 2018

I am very excited to find these shoes. They have great grip and will be perfect for my up coming 6 day white water rafting trip in the Grand Canyon. They will be perfect for the rafting plus the hiking part of the adventure. Love these shoes.

  • Versatile and lightweight!

    March 13, 2018

I've had my Astral's for about two years now and they are the most versatile pair of shoes i've ever owned! I have the TR1 Mesh in red and purple and I LOVE the look and feel of them. They are lightweight, which is a must for me, I hate clunky shoes! The traction is great when wet and they dry FAST! If you are a lover of rafting, canyoneering, or hiking - these are a must!

  • AMAZING all day everyday shoe

    January 14, 2018

These shoes are rad! They're my favorite shoes for traveling because I can do whatever I want &/or need in them. They have great arch support for trail running, hiking, or just plain long days on your feet. The tread is great on muddy trails or wet rocks. They're lightweight, fast drying, and super durable. I love em - high performance for outdoor needs on the trail or river, but still cozy and good-looking for hanging out!

  • Do your Research, youll get these!

    December 16, 2017

When my last pair of water shoes collapsed under too much fun I decided I needed something better. After considerable research with the usual suspects aka Tevas, Keens, etc., I found Astral shoes and ordered this particular one TR1 Mesh Ws and couldnt be more pleased. Because we fish in and out of our kayaks, rocks, shells and muck are commonplace. These shoes are great. Lightweight, durable, drainage-wise they kick butt without all the rocks and silt you would get from others. We are white water rafting this coming spring and these are the shoes I will be packing for both water and hiking components on the trip no more 2 or 3 pairs and the weight to go along with them! Pleased they are eco-friendly as well.

  • Grand Canyon approved

    September 07, 2017

I bought these shoes specifically for a 16 day rafting trip through the Grand Canyon, knowing I'd be hiking and getting in and out of rafts. Well, I wasn't disappointed! I found them stable enough to climb elevations quickly, sturdy enough to traverse over slippery surfaces and durable enough that they didn't fall apart. They dried quickly, even after being submerged, which is a plus when you're making camp every night and packing up in the morning. I'd highly recommend them! I also like these over my Keen's because I wasn't getting small rocks under my feet.
I got them on a pro deal to boot!

  • the BEST shoes ever!

    June 26, 2017

I wore these shoes every day on a two-week rafting trip in the Grand Canyon: jumping in and out of the rafts, wading in the river, hiking dry land and streams, these shoes were vastly comfortable all the time. They're fabulously lightweight, dry quickly, and, as a bonus, they're adorable. A couple days into the river trip, I resolved to buy a second pair of Astrals when I got home, because I LOVE these shoes!

  • Awesome shoes!

    May 02, 2017

Love these! I feel comfortable and surefooted on wet trails, through mud, over slippery rocks, and more. It's amazing to get all this in a shoe that's also cute, lightweight, breathable, and less restrictive than my bulky hiking boots. They also dry fast when they get wet, which is a big perk. Planning to make these my go-tos for summer/warm weather hiking and other outdoors activities.

  • Wish They Had Smaller Sizes!

    February 05, 2020

I just tried on a pair of these at my local outdoor store and OMG, soo comfy!!! Unfortunately, I need a 5.5 and the smallest size available is 6. I'd love to support a local business. Please make these in smaller sizes! Some of us have small feet and love to hike!

  • Super baller, the soles DO get funky.

    April 22, 2017

Love these shoes! I'm not a rafter, but I do a fair amount of regular hiking and puddle-destroying with my toddler, and we cover a lot of ground. I got the red pair, because red shoes are awesome, and the tread is impeccable for skid for my needs. Super comfy if you love a lower-profile shoe. Review lost a star (and might have been more if it wasn't cute and comfy) for the totally BS claim that you can't get foot funk or stank foot. They get run through with water maybe 10-15% of the time, and I was under the impression they'd be okay sockless on a regular basis. Absolutely not my case. Granted, I'm prone to stinky foot, but they weren't when I attempted a new sockless sneaker and now they reek. I take some blame for chemistry and personal grossness, but the claim that they cannot get funky is not true.

  • Really comfy but not long-lasting

    May 19, 2021

This is a great shoe...for about 5 months. Super comfy and grippy. But with 6 months of fairly steady wear (not every day, but a few days a week and some light jogging) it is falling apart.

  • Comfy but fall apart fast

    October 25, 2020

I love the way these shoes look and feel and I would be a repeat customer, but the shoes just don't last at all...I've owned two pairs and both pairs developed gaping holes where the mesh toe box material joins the more rigid lacing area. Two holes on each side of the shoe...both shoes...this seems like a serious design flaw. I hate it when something prematurely falls apart. Terrible for the wallet but more importantly, terrible for the environment! I can't believe I haven't seen other reviews state this problem either. I know it isn't just me experiencing this. Makes me wonder if companies delete their bad reviews?

  • Ouch!

    May 28, 2021

I bought these shoes because of the reviews, and descriptions however I find that the design hurts my foot every time my toes bend. The front part of the lacing holds, stick out too far into the mesh and RAM into the top of my foot when trying to Boulder over rough surfaces. I also found that the inner weaving on the tongue against lace holds rubs my foot raw no matter how loosely I have the laces. Unfortunately very disappointed in the shoe overall.

  • Pretty, light weight, but extremely poor quality

    February 21, 2018

I was so in love with these shoes but within 1-1/2 months the navy color material was peeling off the toe box area, which has just got progressively worse. They look terrible and look like I have white paint on my shoes. Within a month I could also feel the material in the heel area crunching like newspaper despite always putting them on correctly. Now within 5 months the inside area of the toe box is coming apart inside the shoes. I just wear these to work in a library, Im not even hiking in them. They are the most poorly constructed shoes I have ever purchased, I cant believe it at this cost.

    July 05, 2020

these are the most painful shoes I have ever owned. The toe is like steel inside. Walking downhill will inevitably cause foot to press forward so that toes end up painfully pressed against toe box. I wear standard walking socks like Fits that have a cushion toe.

  • Pretty crappy

    January 22, 2018

I think it is pretty crappy that astral doesn't make water shoes in anything smaller than a size 6. These run big and I can't wear the 6 even though I wear a 5.5-6 in a normal shoe. If I want a water shoe, apparently I need to buy kids shoes? That sucks. Also, the fact that they only make high tops in mens based sizes? Sexist and shitty. Girls don't charge hard in whitewater and need a high top shoe? Bullshit. Pretty shitty astral, pretty shitty.
