Granite Grip Outsole

Maximized sole-to-surface contact for increased friction on smooth surfaces. Razor-Siping increases quantity of edges for gripping. Beveled lugs help prevent mud accumulation. Thin profile for flexibility and sufficient sensory feedback promotes better balance and grip.

Water Ready

All Astral shoes have a special relationship with water. Every component, from the thread to the laces are critically evaluated and chosen for its ability to hold up after constant soaking, shed water, and not accumulate funk. Many models have engineered drainage for water to come out while minimizing entry of silt.

Balanced Geometery

We believe that a foot’s position in a shoe should be similar to when barefoot. This allows excellent balance and biomechanically natural lifestyle.

Foot-beds are essentially level (only 1mm drop from heel to toe ) and provide medium arch support.  Tapered instep and heel area for better foothold and control Wide forefoot allows your feet and toes to spread out for stability.

GSS

The “ss” is for “Super Sticky” and we can confidently say that outsoles made with it provide the best grip in water-sports. Unlike other maximum friction compounds, G.ss is non-marking and provides good abrasion resistance. Its low durometer (measure of hardness) lessens impact and provides excellent conformity to surfaces.

  • No more sprained ankles!

    August 25, 2017

These shoes have awesome support. I am prone to sprained ankles and your standard river shoes just don't do it. These are very sturdy. I typically wear size 8 women's and ordered size 8.5. Plenty of room for my neoprene socks, but not too large......Thanks, Astral!

  • Great for fly fishing and canoeing!!

    August 24, 2017

Extremely grippy on rip rap and green rocks. Used for week canoeing and fishing on Yellowstone. Shoes virtually dried overnight and were extremely effective. With a thin wool sock (highly recommendef) the shoes were comfortable and sized correctly for tennis shoes. They do run wide and have good toebox room so go down a half size if you have normal or narrow width feet. My son just ordered a pair and he goes fly fishing every day. He loved them.

  • Great Service, Great Product!

    August 18, 2017

I was unable to find a store nearby that carried these shoes and I am usually very weary about purchasing shoes online but this shoe was totally worth it. The customer service was top notch in helping me find the right fit for my foot and these shoes are absolutely incredible. The world needs more brands like this that have the customer and the environment in mind.

  • Wonderful Customer Service

    June 03, 2017

I ordered this shoe in a half size too large. Thought maybe it would work and I could wear some water socks. But really they were too big - the sizes seem true. Astral took care of me right away and without question - and I'm ordering some different shoes. I really appreciate how easy it is to deal with this company. Thanks for the great customer service !!

  • Upper glued to the lower??

    May 24, 2017

First off I would like to say that the Rassler is a great shoe. The grip is superior and the wide forefoot fits my foot and leaves room for toe splay.
However, after about 4 months of solid kayaking (creeking in and out of my Nomad) and flyfishing the lower footbed stated to become unglued at the heel. It seems like the stitching that runs along the bottom of the shoe does not connect the upper synthetic to the lower. I would like to see a better adhesives or a reinforced stitching method to provide longevity to the shoe. The upper synthetic shoe still has a lot of life left I wish the footbed was not peeling off.

  • Fly fishing machines...

    November 30, 2016

I have worn all sorts of high end river shoes/sandals over the years looking for the perfect shoe for fly fishing on slick granite rivers in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Waders and boots are a good way to get your self killed with steep rocks, deep pools and the frequent need to jump in the river. A year and a half ago I heard about these shoes from some competitive kayaking buddies. I've put them through the ringer and my feet have never been happier. The foot protection, excellent grip on slick rocks and quick draining/drying features make this shoe perfect for what I need. I'm writing this review after having a seam come loose on my shoes this summer. I contacted the Astral staff about it and they fixed the problem right away. I can't say enough good stuff about the shoes or the customer service. If you are a fly fishing enthusiast who would rather spend a day in the mountains bolder hopping creeks and rivers instead of shoulder to shoulder in a crowd on a tailwater I'd recommend the Rassler. Period.

  • Rassler: Comfort and performance win

    September 08, 2016

The quality of footwear when hiking along cliff banks, portaging tough routes around rapids, or attempting to even get to the river when it's pouring rain has become significantly important to me this past year. I was a big fan of the Brewess shoe but after wearing my old pair out, I chose to purchase the Rassler. I love the low profile and stiff sole construction of this shoe, the sticky grip, and ankle protection. These shoes have already been all over California, Washington, and BC and have provided grip when I needed it the most. I like how functional these shoes are as I can hike, scout, and paddle comfortably while not being worried whether I will slip when jumping from rocks, climbing out of a gorge or just walking down to a slick put-in. I have tried other shoes, but nothing compares to Astral's newest designs, outstanding customer service, and innovative construction. Give them a try, you won't be dissapointed!

  • Hiyak to Rassler

    September 01, 2016

After ordering the wrong shoe, the good people at Astral Designs were very eager to help me get into the right shoe. The customer service I received was exceptional and very much a product of a company owned and operated by boaters for boater. The design of the Rassler is more than a great looking high top, it is a very light, functional price of gear.

Thanks again for the help getting the shoes I was looking for all along!

  • Skate shoe Throwback Awesomeness

    August 17, 2016

Wow...I am so pumped to wear a shoe on the water that looks/feels just like the sk8 shoes from my day-to-day life. These are not your mom's "water shoes" - these are sturdy, hip, foot protecting machines that excel on the river and at the pub. These things have saved my feet this summer on portages, scouts, and carrying boats to steep rocky put-ins. Astral nailed it on this one.

  • Go-to creeking shoe!

    August 06, 2016

The Rassler is the first shoe I grab when I know that the day's activities will likely involve plenty of scouting, approaches and portages. As a whitewater photographer, I'm always battling rhododendron and steep banks to get into the right spot for the perfect shot. The Rassler's hightop and sticky rubber give me the confidence to focus on the task at hand.

If you are looking for a solid shoe for Hiking, Fishing, or Rapids this is your shoe. Two weeks ago I hiked +9 miles in Dupont, and this past weekend bailed off in a river for some serious trout fishing for 8 hrs. Weather you are on the dirt or in the water your feet will not go any where you do not want them to go. I could not believe how well they gripped on the slippery rocks of the river this past weekend, I was fully blown away!!!! Keep doing your thing Astral Crew!!!!#Wildyfishing, #Astalfishing

  • Attention all anglers!

    June 11, 2016

I have been in the market for a river shoe to wet wade in for this summer's fly fishing season. I have worn the Astral Brewers for kayaking and loved them so when I contacted the guys down at Astral about my curiosity for a shoe to walk the river with they knew the exact shoe for me. The design of the shoe could not be better. With the hightop feature and the super sticky rubber soles I have yet to beat up my ankles or slip up on the river. For any angler looking for a shoe to keep them upright in the river, this is it!
