Agro Grip Outsole

Aggressive 4mm central lugs bite into loose dirt and mud. Perimeter lugs with greater surface area for gripping smooth surfaces. All lugs beveled to help prevent accumulation of mud, snow, dog poo.

Balanced Geometry

We believe that a foot’s position in a shoe should be similar to when barefoot. This allows excellent balance and biomechanically natural lifestyle.

Foot-beds are essentially level (only 1mm drop from heel to toe ) and provide medium arch support.  Tapered instep and heel area for better foothold and control. Wide forefoot allows your feet and toes to spread out for stability.

This G compound is formulated for premium grip while also providing "excellent" abrasion resistance. Its low durometer means the rubber is softer and therefore conforms well to the ground.

  • The best shoes

    September 20, 2021

These shoes are amazing. I have very tricky feet and am always stuck between sizes (usually 10-10.5). These were right on the money (I went with the larger 10.5). Super comfortable, very grippy, grip is right up there with Vibram. I have worn these for light hiking, jogging, casual wear and workouts. Great for everything and I love the hemp construction as well as it is a bit more eco-friendly. For a tricky shoe-person, I cannot recommend these enough! Can't wait to purchase more.

  • 1 year in

    March 15, 2021

I have owned my pair for over a year now and used them at least 4 days a week. I have used these shoes to go out to clubs, general day outings, running, and hiking. They really are just comfortable well made shoes. If they get dirty I throw them in the wash on cold and let them air dry and they come out looking like new. They show very little wear, only the thread along the toe has frayed slightly. I have also owned the loyaks which were also a great pair (I destroyed the upper playing Ultimate frisbee and spikeball), but the hemp is sturdier and holds up better. If I could I would have done the hemp loyaks, but I found those to be narrower than the regular version. The donner feels a bit wider, but definitely required some breaking in. Hemp is just stiffer and requires some time to break in. If you have EE or a little less they will pinch at first, but after breaking them in I found them to be quite comfortable.

  • Sleek and Performance Ready!

    March 19, 2019

I have owned the Hemp Donner shoes for a while now and have used them all the time. I live in Virginia and have taken these shoes hiking, mountain biking, and just worn them as casual shoes around town. These shoes are comfortable, look great, and perform amazingly when I need them to on the trail. They are the perfect shoe for someone who needs a shoe to wear around town that can also function for every outdoor adventure you might run into unexpectedly.

  • Favorite all-around shoe

    February 20, 2019

The Hemp Donner is now my favorite choice for all-around footwear. Whether it's work or play or happy hour at the pub, these shoes look and perform well. I purchased Loyaks first and loved them through the warmer months around the lake/stream/pool/etc. But as the weather turned colder and wetter, I realized I needed something different. The Hemp Donners filled the space easily with comfort and style. The sizing for me was true to size with a wide, flat toe box which is comfortable for me. The hemp upper seems sturdy after 3-4 months of almost daily use--no issues yet with loose stitching or tearing seams. Every now and again, I'll even have a friend or co-worker comment on them. I'm looking forward to wearing them day hiking this spring.

  • Light & Comfy

    January 23, 2019

Just got them and have worn them a couple of times so far - a couple mile hike to break them in (fantastic grip on the grassy downhill slope); all day at a training session. I'm looking forward to many years of use (I have also purchased a couple of other Astral Shoes and you guys are now my "go to" for casual foot wear!)

  • Versatility defined

    December 18, 2018

I have a unique job in that I am required to be in varying environments; certain days I will be in slick or muddy conditions, the next day I could find myself in an upscale establishment where a certain sense of style is needed. The Hemp Donner has met - and exceeded - all my expectations. The as-advertised soles of the shoe are fantastic when navigating slippery or rocky terrain and the material dries quickly when becoming wet. For more casual events, this shoe is highly versatile and I found myself continuing to wear them after work and on my days off. I had heard good things about Astral for a while and am glad that I went ahead and ordered this shoe... would 10/10 recommend!

  • My Daily Driver

    December 10, 2018

The Hemp Donner is the ultimate shoe for day to day mountain living. Living here in Colorado I need a shoe that I can hike with my dog in rocky terrain and then go right to work. These shoes look like cool street shoes and preform like rugged hiking shoes. I love them. I have been wearing them for 2 months straight now since I got them. The hemp is an impressive material. They seem more durable than other shoes. I am a fan for life. I did go up .5 a size and the fit is perfect.

  • My favorite shoe!

    July 31, 2018

Picked a pair up in Asheville before I flew out for a trip in London. These shoes are truly fantastic. From walking over ten miles a day to clubbing at night, they felt great and looked stylish with both shorts and pants. The silver color I have were a little easy to get trail dust and city grime on, but they are a quick clean and dry super quick. Overall a durable and stylish shoe!

  • Great for Desert Hiking

    June 18, 2018

The Astral Donner has become my favorite shoe for hiking in dry conditions in Arizona and Utah. The densely woven hemp fabric prevents dust from sifting through the shoe, yet is still breathable enough to be comfortable in the heat. Sticky rubber on the soles make it a great shoe for terrain that requires scrambling. I'm a fan of minimalist shoes - I love the low stack height and flexible soles of the Donner.

With insoles in place, I find the toe box to be slightly too narrow for my feet. Removing the insoles makes the fit more comfortable and also improves ground feel.

I've done a lot of hiking in terrain with thorny vegetation. While I have had thorns penetrate the canvas, the soles seem to be thorn resistant, much more so than other minimalist shoes that I've tried. A layer of AquaSeal SR (Freesole) on vulnerable portions of the uppers both protects the stitching and increases thorn resistance of the fabric.

I have tried some of Astral's other shoes (Brewer, Rassler, Loyak, TR1 Trek) in desert conditions, but due to the mesh uppers and water drainage ports, these shoes admit dust and sand. I'm really happy that Astral offers a shoe without these features. I have also found the flexible sole of the Donner (and Brewer and Rassler) to be more comfortable than the much stiffer sole of the TR1 Trek.

  • Comfortable, great traction and ....... hemp

    April 21, 2018

I am always on the lookout for shoes made of hemp - especially ones that can serve multiple purposes. The Hemp Donners are comfortable and are shoes I can wear to work and for getting around on the weekends.

  • Dont listen to the sizing comments

    February 15, 2019

These are great but I followed the advice on the site that they run a half size big. This is not true. They are the exact same size as my other astrals and now I have a pair thats too big and I cant return because I wore them. Major bummer.

  • Best all around shoe right here! Wide-ish fit

    November 06, 2017

These shoes are great, plain and simple! Plain and simple, actually that is and understatement when describing the comfort and versatility of this shoe; it's minimal design is what attracted me most. My first pair of Astral shoes was the Loyak, I purchased them just before summer and I just fell in love! I have a wide foot and the Loyak fit me like a glove without needing to size up, its what led me to look at Astral when I was shopping for new fall footwear that I could enjoy everyday and on the trails. When I purchased these I hadn't considered the fact that I'll be wearing socks, which is not the case when I wear my Loyaks; in my mind the fit should be the same, but it's not. Not really when you add in socks to the equation. Now just a heads up for the folks looking for a wide shoe, they're not EE wide, however they will stretch easily. I used a shoe stretcher for a few days and viola, perfect fit. I will be buying another pair in Black, and highly recommend them.

  • Lack of description given. Not what I expected.

    April 26, 2018

The midsole of this shoe is too squishy, and given the thickness of the foam, it makes the shoes unstable when trying to navigate uneven terrain.
Also, the toe box is not assimilated to the natural shape of the forefoot, there is definitely more room in the toe box compare to regular shoes, but the instep side of the toe box is not straight enough, and the outstep side is not curved enough, creating too much room causing your forefoot to swim too much.

Now the good thing is, the grip of the outersole is pretty good, but when there is a rubber compound this soft, the treads should have lugs of more mass, because if you have too small of lugs made of soft rubber, they will "peel", caused by a soft material gripping well, but peeling because it lacks rigid integrity that exists in harder rubbers.
