Agro Grip Outsole

Aggressive 4mm central lugs bite into loose dirt and mud. Perimeter lugs with greater surface area for gripping smooth surfaces. All lugs beveled to help prevent accumulation of mud, snow, dog poo.

Balanced Geometry

We believe that a foot’s position in a shoe should be similar to when barefoot. This allows excellent balance and biomechanically natural lifestyle.

Foot-beds are essentially level (only 1mm drop from heel to toe ) and provide medium arch support.  Tapered instep and heel area for better foothold and control. Wide forefoot allows your feet and toes to spread out for stability.

G15

This G compound is formulated for premium grip while also providing "excellent" abrasion resistance. Its low durometer means the rubber is softer and therefore conforms well to the ground.

  • My favorite shoe!

    July 31, 2018

Picked a pair up in Asheville before I flew out for a trip in London. These shoes are truly fantastic. From walking over ten miles a day to clubbing at night, they felt great and looked stylish with both shorts and pants. The silver color I have were a little easy to get trail dust and city grime on, but they are a quick clean and dry super quick. Overall a durable and stylish shoe!

  • Great for Desert Hiking

    June 18, 2018

The Astral Donner has become my favorite shoe for hiking in dry conditions in Arizona and Utah. The densely woven hemp fabric prevents dust from sifting through the shoe, yet is still breathable enough to be comfortable in the heat. Sticky rubber on the soles make it a great shoe for terrain that requires scrambling. I'm a fan of minimalist shoes - I love the low stack height and flexible soles of the Donner.

With insoles in place, I find the toe box to be slightly too narrow for my feet. Removing the insoles makes the fit more comfortable and also improves ground feel.

I've done a lot of hiking in terrain with thorny vegetation. While I have had thorns penetrate the canvas, the soles seem to be thorn resistant, much more so than other minimalist shoes that I've tried. A layer of AquaSeal SR (Freesole) on vulnerable portions of the uppers both protects the stitching and increases thorn resistance of the fabric.

I have tried some of Astral's other shoes (Brewer, Rassler, Loyak, TR1 Trek) in desert conditions, but due to the mesh uppers and water drainage ports, these shoes admit dust and sand. I'm really happy that Astral offers a shoe without these features. I have also found the flexible sole of the Donner (and Brewer and Rassler) to be more comfortable than the much stiffer sole of the TR1 Trek.

  • Comfortable, great traction and ....... hemp

    April 21, 2018

I am always on the lookout for shoes made of hemp - especially ones that can serve multiple purposes. The Hemp Donners are comfortable and are shoes I can wear to work and for getting around on the weekends.

  • Best all around shoe right here! Wide-ish fit

    November 06, 2017

These shoes are great, plain and simple! Plain and simple, actually that is and understatement when describing the comfort and versatility of this shoe; it's minimal design is what attracted me most. My first pair of Astral shoes was the Loyak, I purchased them just before summer and I just fell in love! I have a wide foot and the Loyak fit me like a glove without needing to size up, its what led me to look at Astral when I was shopping for new fall footwear that I could enjoy everyday and on the trails. When I purchased these I hadn't considered the fact that I'll be wearing socks, which is not the case when I wear my Loyaks; in my mind the fit should be the same, but it's not. Not really when you add in socks to the equation. Now just a heads up for the folks looking for a wide shoe, they're not EE wide, however they will stretch easily. I used a shoe stretcher for a few days and viola, perfect fit. I will be buying another pair in Black, and highly recommend them.

  • Lack of description given. Not what I expected.

    April 26, 2018

The midsole of this shoe is too squishy, and given the thickness of the foam, it makes the shoes unstable when trying to navigate uneven terrain.
Also, the toe box is not assimilated to the natural shape of the forefoot, there is definitely more room in the toe box compare to regular shoes, but the instep side of the toe box is not straight enough, and the outstep side is not curved enough, creating too much room causing your forefoot to swim too much.

Now the good thing is, the grip of the outersole is pretty good, but when there is a rubber compound this soft, the treads should have lugs of more mass, because if you have too small of lugs made of soft rubber, they will "peel", caused by a soft material gripping well, but peeling because it lacks rigid integrity that exists in harder rubbers.
