Water Ready

All Astral shoes have a special relationship with water. Every component, from the thread to the laces are critically evaluated and chosen for its ability to hold up after constant soaking, to shed water, and not to accumulate funk. Many models have engineered drainage for water to come out while minimizing entry of silt.

Balanced Geometry

We believe that a foot’s position in a shoe should be similar to when barefoot. This allows excellent balance and biomechanically natural lifestyle.

Foot-beds are essentially level (only 1mm drop from heel to toe ) and provide medium arch support.  Tapered instep and heel area for better foothold and control. Wide forefoot allows your feet and toes to spread out for stability.

GSS

The “ss” is for “Super Sticky” and we can confidently say that outsoles made with it provide the best grip in water-sports. Unlike other maximum friction compounds, G.ss is non-marking and provides good abrasion resistance. Its low durometer (measure of hardness) lessens impact and provides excellent conformity to surfaces.

  • Excellent choice for river schlepping

    June 08, 2021

Nice design. Lightweight, supportive; compared to other river shoes, these offer excellent foot protection, especially in the side ankle and toe box. These are the areas that are susceptible to getting mangled on slippery bottoms. These shoes are not overly clunky or unforgivingly hot out of the water. Slightly stiff sole save bottom of foot from cramping or bruises on those roundey rocks. Most impressed with the rubber on the soles. Outperforms my expensive fly fishing boots on slippery rocks and even grips on the super slick mossy and algae covered stones. So much lighter than those bulky fly-fishing boots. Bought these for my canoe trips and portages, but they have become my go to summer wading shoes for any river or stream shenanigans.

I wear a size 11.5 Vans shoe, bought 12s in the Rasslers, and Im pleased with the fit. No socks are fine and cool, for fast drying canoe days, but if I loosen up laces, I still have room for my wader socks or a pair of low rise 1.5 neoprene socks for the cooler streams.

  • Top Choice for River and Canyon Use

    April 21, 2021

I use the Rassler 2.0 for rivers and canyons in alternate seasons, both guiding and recreational trips. I live in a high altitude tropical environment and wet, slick rock is a constant. The grip is phenomenal and the shoes are comfortable. I need to go a size higher than usual, but that's mainly because I have wide feet, I'm using neoprene socks, and I have a permanently swollen 1st MTP joint on one side. The Rassler 2 has all the (considerable) performance advantages of the original Rassler along with better durability.

These shoes are designed for rivers and are obviously at home there but I have to add a special plug for canyoneering use. These are perfect canyon shoes without any of the weird "moon boot" look of some purpose-built canyon footwear. I spend a lot of time in wet, slick, vertical environments and these are the only shoes I want on my feet. I can also wear them just as easily around town. Great shoes if you need something you can beat up in really demanding conditions.

  • Best all around shoe

    January 24, 2021

I began using astral gear for whitewater kayaking with their pfds and the infamous astral brewers. After unfortunate technical difficulties with a pair of astrals this company sent me a new pair for free. Amazing customer service. The problems with the first generation shows were fixed and these new generation of shoes are the best outdoor shoes Ive ever had.
I began fly fishing the blue lines and needed ankle support for long hike-in destinations so I landed on the rasslers which I have always admired.
These shoes do not disappoint. I can go from long hikes up Appalachian mountains, straight to scaling up waterfalls with complete confidence in my shoes. I was hesitant about hiking in them, but after a time or two on long trails I prefer these shoes above my hiking boots.
Great shoes, great brand, great adventures.

  • Best water shoe hands down!

    July 29, 2019

I'm a kayak instructor and river guide, I punish these shoes and they continue to hold up well after 3 years. They dry super fast and are so comfortable, I don't bother taking them of when I get off the river even when wet. I've tried other shoes but they fall apart under my 200 ln frame especially as I scramble along rocky river banks and bushwhack my way during rescue situations. I am super stoked to see the Rassler 2.0 back in the line up. I'm definitely ordering a second pair just in case I eventually wear out, loose, or lighting stikes my original pair :-)

  • Great Grand Canyon Shoe

    May 06, 2019

I needed a good all-around shoe for a 21-day Grand Canyon trip. These worked great for chilly mornings on the raft, with my drysuit in my kayak, hiking up stream beds, as well as canyoneering (scrambling up slot canyons, rappelling & rock climbing) with their super sticky soles. They dried quickly each afternoon (although everything does in the desert). A guy on my trip also bought these for the trip and our only complaint is that both of us had rubbed bloody spots on both of the backs of our heels after the first big hike because the back of the high-top part is pretty hard until you wear them in a bit. Loosening the laces and wearing socks that are taller than the back edge seemed to help. I usually wear a women's 8, I ended up with the men's 6.5/women's 7.5 as I felt they ran a bit big. These will be my new kayaking shoe and look cool enough to wear around town too!

  • Ride

These shows might be great in the water but I love them on my mountain bike! They are sort grippy to the pedals, ankle protection without restriction, minimal to no bulk and they hose off and dry overnight!!!!

  • Small Critique

    June 26, 2020

Off the bat, you should buy these shoes. For some context, I am a river raft guide on the American River in Lotus California, and I also lead groups through canyons with the adventure company I work for. I bought these shoes just for this season knowing I wanted more toe protection than the Chacos I was wearing. First, these shoes have been absolutely amazing. They grip everything they should grip and have withstood for the most part everything I've thrown at them (which is a lot). However, the two downsides I have encountered in the 3 weeks I have had them are: the stitches have split on the toes from scratching on rocks during canyoneering and the sturdy fabric around the Achilles has created some nasty blisters. I should have seam-sealed them before the season knowing I would be using them pretty hare, but it would be could see a protective coating over the threads in maybe the next generation fo the Rassler. And for the Achilles issue, I would just add a bit of padding to that portion of the shoe especially because its a half cab shoe and there will be constant rubbing on the Achilles no matter what. In conclusion, these shoes have been absolutely amazing and will definitely end up buying another pair in the future. looking forward to the next generation.

  • Awesome!

    July 13, 2019

First of all this is my second pair of Astral shoes. And I must say, I will ONLY buy Astral shoes for all my three season activities. I use this shoe for fly fishing, mountain biking, and even hiking. It's also a great approach shoe when I'm heading out to the local crag. Great water shoe, although takes a while to dry. My only complaint is the heel loop broke off on one of the shoes after about a month, and I wasn't even tugging on it very hard. Now I'm contemplating cutting off the other to even it up, which I'm not stoked about. For that, I'm taking away one star.

  • Not durable

    April 08, 2021

I would love these shoes but they haven't proven to be durable in the slightest. Early on the sole starting coming unglued from the shoe and now the fabric is already tearing at the heals. Pretty disappointed with the durability after only a small amount of use, otherwise they are great.
