Water Ready

All Astral shoes have a special relationship with water. Every component, from the thread to the laces are critically evaluated and chosen for its ability to hold up after constant soaking, to shed water, and not to accumulate funk. Many models have engineered drainage for water to come out while minimizing entry of silt.

Balanced Geometry

We believe that a foot’s position in a shoe should be similar to when barefoot. This allows excellent balance and biomechanically natural lifestyle.

Foot-beds are essentially level (only 1mm drop from heel to toe ) and provide medium arch support.  Tapered instep and heel area for better foothold and control. Wide forefoot allows your feet and toes to spread out for stability.

This G compound is formulated for premium grip while also providing "excellent" abrasion resistance. Its low durometer means the rubber is softer and therefore conforms well to the ground.

  • Superb paddling shoe

    September 17, 2021

These things are a dream for paddling trips. They are flexible enough to kneel comfortably in a canoe and the extra support made carrying heavy loads a breeze. Highly recommended.

  • Go-to shoe for everything

    April 06, 2021

Seriously the best outdoor shoe out there. I am on my third pair and they are the best. I trail run in them, mountain bike in them, kayak in them, raft in them, and go out to bars in them. I love the wide toebox and the overall flexible feel to these shoes, as well as the grip. The ultimate test with these shoes was hiking down to phantom ranch in the grand canyon carrying a huge pack of my winter rafting gear in December, and then using them for the next two weeks over my drysuit socks. While I still use dedicated trail runners and boots for rougher, longer runs and hikes, I can put these Astrals on everyday and pretty much be set for anything. How about making a waterproof trail shoe for wetter/colder use, Astral?

  • Wow!

    February 25, 2021

Very comfortable, great summer shoes, great hiking shoes, amazing tread!,if you traverse a puddle or stream these will dry so fast compared to regular footwear that really stood out to me when I experienced that. I wish they made an EH rated composite toe work boot! Ive worn them in the winter when the snow isnt deep because I feel the tread is superior to everything else available.

  • Best trail shoes of my 4k miles!

    August 11, 2020

These are hands down the best trail shoes I have ever used for backpacking. They are super light but sturdy. The sole grips and does not slip, period. It is so fun to just wade into water, enjoy your time there, and be confident that they will dry more quickly than other shoes. I brag about these shoes every time I wear is definitely my best piece of gear I own right now! Only complaint...and it is that the top curve of the tongue is a little tight around the top of your foot, sometimes causing a bind when you initially put it on. I have the Brewer's and these have this same issue more pronounced. But on the Junction you can easily adjust this away via your lacing, and then you are ready to absolutely crush some miles!

  • Wheres the Sequoia green

    March 14, 2020

Why did you guys get rid of the Sequoia green color??? I love those ones that being said the shoes are light and great for water crossings they are also pretty comfortable as far as durability goes I dont think they will hold up to well on anything like a through hike more than maybe 200 250 miles or so....Also great customer service had an issue with the first pair I bought adding a new one sent to me within three days... Bring back the green!

  • Great breathable lightweight trail backpacking shoe

    January 21, 2020

Simple, very comfortable, lightweight, breathable, and quick-drying. These shoes are great for the minimalist. As in all lightweight trail runners, durability is sacrificed somewhat, but you must consider the trade-off. Love the subdued colors (brown) when you can find them. I have purchased extra pairs.

  • These make no sense....

    June 23, 2019

I purchased these for a photo shoot in the Flat Tops Wilderness Area in Colorado, a five-day shoot where I would need to pack in my backpacking gear and camera gear. Every ounce of gear had to be completely necessary, and unnecessary weight could make a tough shoot simply miserable. After receiving and wearing these, I just don't understand how these shoes can be so light and simultaneously so supportive and cushioned/comfortable. I was not expecting this. I was expecting shoes that were lightweight, but where the cushioning and support were compromised to achieve the feather-light weight. I would have actually been okay with that. But I was wrong. These may be the perfect trail/water shoe. They wear like a dream. When sized right, they hug your foot, but still leave enough clearance in the toe to actually use your foot as it was intended. The rubber is extremely grippy, and the tread acts like mud-bogger tires on the trail. And, they look really good. I only heard of Astral for the first time about a month ago, and now I'm a cheerleader.

  • Great Shoe, Exceeded Expectations

    June 08, 2019

I wear these shoes daily. Very comfortable, lightweight, fast drying shoe. I do work in the outdoors so these shoes have been beat hard while going through many cycles of being wet and muddy. The shoes do have rips in the mesh on the toe of the shoe where they crease when I walk but I have had these shoes for 10 months now with everyday abuse. I will still continue to wear them and actually about to buy some loyaks.

  • Great all around Trail shoe

    January 23, 2019

Having been a minimalist runner/hiker since 2009, I have tried many brands and styles of minimalist footwear. Astral has checked so many of the boxes that meet my needs with the TR1 Junction. I have put mine through a lot in the 8 months I have had them. I still rotate them with another pair for hiking (Altra Superior 3.5s), but the TR1s excel in a few ways over any previous shoes I have owned. Specifically, the grippiness of the sole is absolutely unmatched (hey, Astral-dont ever change this!). Also, the durability of the upper, midsole and outsole are outstanding (almost like a heavy hiking boot). The only trade-off is that they are heavier than other trail shoes I have used in the past few seasons. I think I am going to try the TR1 mesh for this summer. I found the fit of the TR1 Junctiin to be true to size.
As a side note, I had an issue with a pair of Astral Hemp Donners and Astral made it right immediately. I like this company and this shoe a lot!

Most comfortable shoes I have ever had. I like the wide toe box and the soft feel of the shoes on my feet. I recently wore them all over China on a trip. They are very versatile for a lot of occasions, hiking included. Thanks for such great shoes.

  • Don't Change Anything WithThis Shoe!

    June 30, 2018

July 1, 2018. I purchased a pair of the TR Junction M's (Sequoia Green) on April 5th as soon as they were available. Since that time this has been my daily shoe for any and all activities. At first I feared they would never stand up to rigorous daily use. But I was wrong. Mowing, garden work, trail hiking, fishing, kayaking, mountain bike riding, clearing brush and other daily activities failed to take any noticeable toll on the shoes and they still look and feel as comfortable as new. At this point I wouldn't be able to come up with even an insignificant complaint. As long as this shoe is available I'll never consider any other shoe for my 3 season footwear.

  • Exceeded my expectations!

    June 12, 2018

This is my second pair of Astral shoes. I've been wearing a pair of Brewers on the river for years. I'm a fan. After hunting for a land shoe, I decided to try the TR1 Junctions. Ordering a pair of shoes online can be a gamble; however, as soon as they came out of the box, I knew I had made a wise purchase.

I prefer a light, simple, comfortable and durable shoe for being out in the forest and trail. These are my daily shoes that I wear for my job outdoors - and I find traditional hiking shoes and boots are too cumbersome, heavy and rigid. The TR1 Junction is supportive yet nimble. I swapped out the insoles for my heel and arch semi-orthotics, and the fit is perfect for my feet (I'm a 10.5 men's). Plus it helps that it's a good-looking shoe to boot.

Thanks, Astral, for another quality product.

  • So Much Awesomeness

    April 04, 2018

My feet are thanking me right now. These shoes are light ,comfortable and the wider toe box paired with the minimal heal to toe drop allows my feet to flow the way they were intended. Although I haven't had a chance to test these on the river or trail yet I'm certain I won't be disappointed. Looking forward to putting many miles on these shoes.
I'd also like to thank the Astral customer service team who provided me with a prompt and detailed response when I was trying to narrow down my shoe search.

    March 30, 2018

Loved my first pair of TR1 Junction M's so much, I bought a second pair! This is a great shoe for hikes, exercising, and just everyday use! Love the company's philosophy and highly recommend their shoes!

  • Great everything shoe!

    March 22, 2018

I got these about 2 months ago and it has been the best shoe purchase i've ever made! I wear them around town, on the trails, and when traveling. Just spent 17 days in Thailand and this was the only shoe I packed; worn walking the markets, hiking in the jungle, jumping off waterfalls, biking, and for boating and other water activities around the islands, all without socks! Never an issue with blisters or chaffing, dried quickly, and handled incredibly in all situations. Couldn't be happier, strong work Astral!

  • Nice Shoe

    February 05, 2018

I spend most of my time on or near the river year around. Changing from boat shoes to hiking/work shoes was always a bit of pain. The boat shoes just did not work as well hiking and climbing. Astral has changed the game with the TR1. The arch support makes the shoe work great for when I'm hiking or scrambling around and as you would expect the shoe works great in the water. Great product and a nice company. I highly recommend them.

  • A Hiking Shoe for those not afraid of Wet Feet

    December 14, 2017

I used this shoe for 500+ miles this season. I loved the performance of the grippy sole. When going back and forth between this and other hiking sneakers I would notice how much more grippy Astrals were. I loved how quickly the shoes dried out. I'm not one to avoid getting my feet wet so it was nice to have the holes drain out water as soon as I got out. I would recommend these shoes to anyone.

  • Best shoe evah

    September 27, 2017

Got tr1 junction a week ago and have worn them everyday since. Worn to work, worn on the trail, in the drink, hang out to dry and repeat. Amazingly comfortable, functional, and they just look different (in a good way) from other shoes on the market. I fly fish, I wouldn't noreally sport these on a backcountry trip, but for an impromptu jump in the creek on the way home from work, these are ideal. The rubber is SUPER sticky, more so than the rubber on my fishing boots. I suggest astral gets together with my favorite fishing boot and combine forces. Or maybe hire me to help design a fishing boot of your own. I live in Cullowhee NC and happy to commute. Thanks for awesome product...I'll be waiting on your call.

  • Great product

    July 24, 2017

I was shopping/browsing in stores along the coast and saw the Astral products on display. They were attractive, but I had no interest in purchasing. My daughter who is a nurse tried on a pair to see if they would help being her feet for 12 hour shifts. I decide to try a pair and found them to be very comfortable. I had had 2 knee replacements and back issues and can never feel great in any type shoe. I have been wearing my new Astrals for 2 weeks and they have been shoe for my feet since my heel feels lower and my toes don't cramp. It allows me to have great walks with no discomfort. My daughter also purchased a pair and raves about there comfort for being on her feet. I wish they would make a pair for playing golf!!

It was amazing to be able to walk surefooted across a rocky creek bed (while supporting my barefooted companion)--the water drained out easily, the shoes were still comfortable to hike in while wet, and they dried out completely by the next afternoon. As expected, my feet got a little wet from walking through wet grass--so you have to be okay with your feet being wet--but the overall breathability of the shoes made them an excellent choice for a 4 day bikepacking trip. wet fee

  • I LOVE these shoes

    May 07, 2017

I received my Tri Junction shoes in the mail a few weeks ago as I could not find a local retailer that carried them in Seattle. That will change soon I imagine because these shoes were made for the NW. Lightweight, sturdy, and ridiculously comfortable. Not to mention they look great too! I rarely write reviews but happy to for such as well deserved product. I'll be a 100% an Astral shoe guy for life.

  • Been Wanting a Show Like This for a Long Time

    February 08, 2017

Until now my typical trail shoe has usually been a retired pair runners...admittedly not the best choice. I've looked for trail shoes... a lot. I'm not that picky but I could never seem to find the right combination of fit and comfort in a trail-ready shoe. At least one that is simple, functional, lightweight, primed and can handle getting dunked on the regular. I've had a pair of Brewer's (also a great shoe!) for some time and always wondered why Astral doesn't make a beefier shoe for the trail. Then bam! The TR1's showed up. I purchased the Junction and it could be the best three-season hiker there is. I'm probably never taking them off. Thanks!

  • Dissapointed in durability of mesh material - TR1 Junction M's

    September 04, 2021

I had been searching for a nice pair of vegan/vegan friendly hiking shoes. So, I bought these shoes as they are a good looking pair of shoes I planned to use frequently on hikes and weekend use. They feel extremely comfortable, and looked great out of the box. Only after about four to five months of use the mesh vamp on both left and right shoes began to tear. Now, I have two large size holes in the mesh of each shoe after eight months. I want to be able to recommend these shoes, but I cannot for the price I paid and durability issues I've encountered.

  • High hopes

    May 15, 2021

I wanted to like these shoes. I wanted a shoe that I could wear on day hikes and also when stand up paddle boarding and kayaking. The fit was fine and the shoes felt good until I had them on my foot for more than 10 minutes. For my feet, the lack of a liner fabric inside (under the lace area close to the toes where the fabric is stitched) made it so there were pressure points on the top of my foot. I tried them with and without socks. This made the shoe unwearable for me as my feet became irritated with or without socks. I had to return them.

  • Stinky Shoes

    July 07, 2021

I am very disappointed with my men's TR1 Junctions. Actually, I love the shoes. Super comfortable right out of the box. No break in period at all. However, after wearing them for about a week they smelled... Bad. I only hiked about 60 miles and did a 9 mile kayak paddle. I even took the insoles out and let them and the shoes air dry in the sun. They smelled horribly bad! Serious funk. I washed them with Oxyclean and let them air dry. They smelled okay but only for about another week or so. Now, they stink again, it's so bad, my dog even tried rolling on them after our last hike. And during this time, I only wore them hiking. I am very frustrated and disappointed that I spent $100 on a pair of shoes that are supposed to be "anti-stink" and they smell like a dead animal. I am certain that it is not my feet. I have a pair of Solomon winter hiking boots and a pair of Hanwags both have hundreds of miles on them and no smell. I also have a pair of Aleader water shoes that I've worn for over 3 years, also have hundreds of miles kayaking in, and no smell. I know after wearing these Junctions that I cannot return them, but I am tempted to send them back just so you can smell for yourselves how horrible it is.

  • Beware - shoes wear out quickly on pavement

    January 28, 2021

I would have rated these shoes higher but unfortunately they are not very durable. The weight and fit are fine, however the G5 rubber soles wear out quickly if you walk very much on pavement/concrete. Also, the toe stitching comes apart easily. The Astral warranty person I exchanged emails with pointed out that these shoes are only rated for 500 miles. Try a more durable shoe if you decide to walk more than 500 miles, and on varied surfaces.
