Flex Grip Outsole

This rubber allows excellent flexibility and sensory feedback for heightened grip and balance. Maximized surface area for high friction on smooth surfaces. Divided lugs for substantial grip on loose dirt. Razor Siping maximizes edges that bite into surfaces upon flexion.

Water Ready

All Astral shoes have a special relationship with water. Every component, from the thread to the laces are critically evaluated and chosen for its ability to hold up after constant soaking, to shed water, and not to accumulate funk. Many models have engineered drainage for water to come out while minimizing entry of silt.

Balanced Geometry

We believe that a foot’s position in a shoe should be similar to when barefoot. This allows excellent balance and biomechanically natural lifestyle.

Foot-beds are essentially level (only 1mm drop from heel to toe ) and provide medium arch support.  Tapered instep and heel area for better foothold and control. Wide forefoot allows your feet and toes to spread out for stability.

This G compound is formulated for premium grip while also providing "excellent" abrasion resistance. Its low durometer means the rubber is softer and therefore conforms well to the ground.

  • Just ordering my third pair

    September 19, 2021

I recently ordered my third pair of these. I originally order this shoe back in 2019 and used it almost daily for about a year. Got another pair and did the same. The shoe is great for really returning to minimalism and feeling the ground. It is very flexible and light so do not expect much support. If you are coming from hard shoe bottoms you may need to ease in to long walks with these shoes else your feet might fatigue easily.

My only complaint with these is that in my second pair I seemed to run through the sole pretty quickly. I had to order my third pair as my second have holes in the bottom now. I didn't think that I was walking that much but I guess I did.

Overall it's a great shoe though - happy to have found Astral as a brand. Was into another shoe brand before but I noticed quality was really going down in it so I was looking for a switch and found Astral.

  • Best shoe I've ever bought

    September 14, 2021

I never write reviews. Actually, I don't think I've ever written a review. For how much I love these shoes, I had to. These shoes stay on my feet pretty much 100% of the time I'm awake. I'm going to even buy a 2nd pair for when these wear out (which I don't think will happen anytime soon, as I wear these every day to work, outside, running errands, etc, and they still look brand new). These are also the most comfortable shoe I've ever worn. Maybe not a ton of heel support, but I'm used to that as I sometimes wear Crocs and Chacos which don't have any either. When these get wet they dry out super quick and never smell bad. I can never find shoes that look good and fit me right as I have a pretty wide toe box, but these check both of those boxes! These have plenty of room in the toe box which I really appreciate. Thanks Astral for making my favorite shoe!

  • 500 Days

    August 19, 2021

These, by all accounts, were never designed to be every day wear shoes. Read a lot of reviews that dinged them for having no arch support, etc. However, I have been wearing mine for 500 days (approximately) and I have absolutely no complaints. I work outside. Often on a very hot dock. I could melt (literally) the soles off of a new pair of Converse Chuck Taylors a month into the season. I also spend a fair amount of time scrambling over rocks, in shallow water, on a kayak/SUP/windsurfer, etc. (All of this at work. Ive got a pretty good job, in case you hadnt noticed.). Okay, as I said, never meant for everyday wear, Im used to no arch support Converse, never know what Ill deal with in a day.these are the perfect shoes! Ive worn these every day for a year and a half (unless there was snow on the ground) and Ive just noticed that the sole at the heel is wearing thin. Really? Id have burnt through 3 pairs of Chucks by now. And they still look good enough to wear to town. Trust me, I have no problem with my general dirtbag persona, so these shoes may be too classy for me. Seriously, these are my everyday, three-season shoes. Will be buying more.

  • 6-stars! The Ultimate ATS (All-Terrain Shoe)

    June 22, 2021

I just hiked about 100 miles in these shoes through 1000's of feet of elevation over rocks, sand, river crossings, boulders, river beds, snowbanks, etc. and these shoes rocked it every step of the way. By far the most durable, comfortable, and versatile shoe I've ever found for any kind of travel situation. Great on the trail and look good enough to also get past a bouncer at a club if you find yourself in a city. The only shoe I would travel with now.

  • Multipurpose Shoe

    November 07, 2020

This shoe is above all great. I love using it for kayaking and other things like going to the beach, but the best part of the shoe is its versatility. I work as a bouncer at a bar and that floor gets absolutely disgusting. With this shoe, I don't have to worry about slipping on vomit and then I can throw my shoes right in wash. I know Astral will never recommend throwing shoes in the wash, but these things last. Had them for over a year and they haven't failed

  • Probably the best shoes ever

    July 28, 2020

I just wanted some minimalist summer shoes that I could wear for activities as well as dress up a bit, that looked stylish without standing out too much. These shoes turned out to be all that and so much more. I didnt believe the other reviews that said you could go backpacking in these... now I get it. For being so lightweight and unobtrusive they are incredibly tough. The insoles they come with are perfect for barefoot, but I found that to wear with socks its best to either remove the insoles completely or replace them with Vivobarefoot cork insoles. While I love Vivos, they too often stand out more than I like... these Astrals have similar fit, better (more grippy) soles, and look like normal shoes! Ill definitely be looking to Astral for future purchases and will recommend wholeheartedly. 10/10.

  • Not Just For Water

    July 07, 2020

I didn't purchase these necessarily for water activities but primarily because I liked the look. I received these today and didn't take them off until I had to. They are very comfortable and the look is low profile and uniquely stylish. I just ordered a second pair and hope these don't get discontinued like so many others. I'm sure they're great for water activities and I'll use them for that as well but these will be my go to everyday shoe.

  • Great shoes on and off trail

    February 12, 2020

These shoes have a durable yet thin sole. I wear these on a daily basis and they have held up great. I also enjoy the lightweight and minimalist design. Comparable to vivobarefoot, but at a lower price point.

  • Awesome Shoe

    January 20, 2020

This is my perfect shoe. It does not restrict the foot, part classy part casual, not an outrageous price tag, well draining, quick drying. I use these from working in a healthcare setting to trail running. If you have an affinity for minimalist shoes, you cannot go wrong here.

  • Best ever!!!

    December 20, 2019

I love these shoes. I bought them for water born activities, but find myself wearing them all the time, EVERYWHERE. I recently was wearing them and was activated for SWAT. I trekked 8 miles through all sorts of rural terrain, found the threat, and after 8 hours looked good enough to go out on the town. These are my new favorite shoe. Now Im hoping they might come out with a tactical line.. . Lol

  • Awesome barefoot summer shoes.

    July 15, 2019

I bought these as Sperry Topsider replacements, and they are a superior option. The navy/brown has a classic look without being too snobby like the Sperry. They are the most comfortable barefoot shoe I have worn in warm weather because they don't cause blisters and they really breathe. My feet do sweat a little, but much less than in other shoes. They are my new favorites for morning dog walks too!

  • Great shoe for wider feet

    July 05, 2019

Love these shoes and the shape of the toe box. I've got about five different models of Astral shoes and these are the most comfortable. They have great grip on slippery rocks.

  • Best shoe for strengthening your feet

    July 01, 2019

Feet are much like hands when it comes to how the muscles work. If you dont exercise the muscles, the get lazy and problems start to develop. Most shoes want you to have thick foam or air in the sole to make their shoes more comfortable to wear. This "comfort" is like wearing thick leather gloves on your hands, in that it will inhibit your ability to feel the ground beneath your feet. This in turn will cause your feet to become more reliant on the comfort and support and can lead to things like plantar fasciitis or knee problems because of imbalances introduced by big, heavy, comfy shoes. I have had my Astrals for 3 years and they are the closest thing to being barefoot I can get when I have to wear shoes.

  • These shoes found me!

    June 01, 2019

I went to my local outdoor store in SC to look for water shoes. 10 feet inside the door were these shoes. The sales rep explained their story, I tried them on, walked a few feet and SOLD! WOW! I LOVE these shoes! I never buy anything this quick I am a shopper that studies completely before buying.... so thats why I say they found me. I have worn them several times fishing by now and honestly I hate to take them off, my wife is surprised I dont wear them to bed

  • Awesome for SUP

    May 11, 2019

I love my Loyaks, I use them for white water SUP in Japan, after my guide Yacu recommended them They are super comfortable, even when constantly wet and give me protection and confidence when walking through shallow water and across rocks. I would never go back to neoprene booties. Now debating what to buy for my second pair of Loyaks!!!!

Just got my loyaks today and I'm in love with them already! Super light weight cant hardly tell they ate on your feet but the soles still thick enough that it dosent hurt to step on thing like your run of the mill walmart river shoes. I also love the fact that they tie on to your feet and stay there. I will definitely be ordering again!

  • The perfect shoe for planters fibroma

    March 28, 2019

I just received my second pair of these, after wearing the first daily for a year. They are perfect for folks like me who walk everywhere, and suffer from planters fibroma.
I've even convinced several friends to buy a pair of their own.
There is only one thing I would change, and that's would be to offer them in more colors.

  • Extreme durability/longevity

    March 10, 2019

Not gonna lie, I dont own many pairs of shoes. As such I have worn these shoes every day for almost 4 years now. I have used them for countless hikes, runs, and backpacking. The canvas on these are super tough. Ive had these long enough where the rubber soles on the balls of my feet have worn through but the canvas hasnt torn. I also have very flat feet and these the zero drop heel on these is very comfortable. I would highly recommend these.

  • Loyaks, You Healed My Broken Feet!

    January 24, 2019

Ever since I broke my big toe trail running and was immobilized in a boot for 2 1/2 months, my feet and ankles in both feet have been messed up. Almost constant pain and discomfort from the immobility and compensation. Then last Fall I went to the beach for a week and was barefoot for 7 days straight, and lo and behold, ALL my foot pain went away. When I got home and got back to work in traditional shoes, the pain returned. Since then, I have been on a quest for barefoot, minimalist shoes I can wear to the office. After trying and failing several times, I had almost given up. My last resort was a local outfitter store, and I stumbled upon these Astral Loyaks. The second I put them on, I was blown away. I walked all over the concrete floor in the store, even with the insole removed, and my feet had never felt so good, and so free to function like feet! It's like wearing a sock with rubber on the bottom, but it looks like shoes I can wear to work! So, of course, I got them, and guess what? No more foot pain! Astral, I cannot thank you enough. You have made my year! I am telling everyone about these shoes and what they've done for me!

  • River shoes reborn

    January 19, 2019

Ive had lots of rivershoes from popular webbed sandal brands to water shoes from big name outdoor brands. Astral created the right balance of supportive shoe structure with light-weight drainage and flexibility of sandal effectiveness. Even better, they look great walking around the campsite or recounting the adventure at the bar days later. Wont save your life like a PFD, but they are great water shoes.

  • If I had to have only ONE pair of kicks...these would be them

    January 07, 2019

For my lifestyle, these babies are all I need. I'm a fan of minimalist footwear and these feel pretty close to barefoot. The soles are super grippy and durable so far (I go pretty hard on my shoes), they dry super quick. I mostly wear them barefoot but they're also great w/ socks on colder days. Another thing is that they don't stink! I don't know how they do it, but these shoes don't get the typical foot funk that you tend to get when you go sock-less.
In a given day I can ride my mountain bike, run errands, stomp around our creek, go for a walk in the neighborhood, and then grab some dinner in town...and never have to change shoes. I'm stoked on these :)

  • Killer Kicks

    January 02, 2019

I just took my first pair of Astrals to Costa Rica after having them recommended by a salesman at Cumberland Transit here in Nashville.

They are AMAZING. I wore them in water, mud, climbing rocks, on the beach etc. They performed like champs. And grip like glue. Hands down the best shoe I've ever had.

That said, I'm putting in a request for solid colors. All black, all blue, for men. Easier to wear indoors, and might pass with work clothes. Just my meager 2 cents.

1000 thanks for making a great product. Hope this finds you well!

    November 09, 2018

I am 6' with size 13 feet and I paddle a Dagger Axiom 8.5 so I've needed to use booties most of the time. I had heard these work as well so I gave them a try - They Fit! It is tight but that was expected. They are comfortable shoes and, like other Astral shoes, they grip the rocks really well. These also look to be built better than my Brewers but we will see with time.

  • Super Happy with These Shoes

    September 20, 2018

I've purchased 4 pairs of this shoe overall and worn them almost exclusively for the past 3 years. Zero drop shoes with a minimal stack height were important for me, and the footbox is a little wider than most which is necessary for my feet. These shoes fit fantastic, they clean up easily and tend to not stink that much in between washings.

This is my regular casual shoe, I wear them to work and run in them. The fact that they are water shoes as well just makes them that much more versatile for me. Love this shoe!

  • Just what I needed

    September 04, 2018

I replaced some other water shoes with these because I liked my Brewers so much. I've worn them at least 3 days per week for the past several weeks. They look nice enough to have replaced a pair of casual shoes, as well as being water shoes. Two-for-one when traveling.

I used them for kayaking, paddle boarding, and walking in rivers and lakes, as well as normal street shoes. They were great. They are more thinly padded than the Brewers, but that gave me better feel walking across the rocks in the rivers.

    These met all my expectations.

  • Awesome Shoes

    August 10, 2018

These shoes I bought for my sister's fiance as well as a pair for myself, and even my boss has a pair, since he rows and is in and out of the water all day. These shoes are beautiful I've gotten so many compliments at work, and they are so comfortable. I don't have to worry about getting them wet! They wash easily too. Since they don't run half sizes, I would get the size down, as they have fit perfectly. I would definitely get these for anyone who wants a shoe that will last in multiple terrain, but especially for anyone who is water-bound, these shoes are a must-have! Thank you Astral!

    July 04, 2018

I have been in search of the perfect land/water shoe for years. I owned a pair of Ocean Minded Waveseekers for years that I loved but they wore down and they no longer make the shoes. Im glad they dont because I found these in my search. They are perfectly light weight yet sturdy and have great support. Theyve been with me to the beach, in the ocean, hiking the trails and creeks in Sedona, and I wore them for three days at Disneyland. Additionally I wear them around town for everyday use. • Awesomeness on my feet

    June 29, 2018

I love my lowyaks!!! Super comfortable, beachy vibe rain or shine. The removable in sole is a plus compared to the OG Brewer. The only negative would be the lack of colorways. Id love to see a Lowyak Rasta or a tribute pattern to the SMNP as its so close to the home of Astral. All pairs of Astrals that I own and my family fit our outdoor lifestyle perfectly. Living in Florida we do a ton of kayaking, beaches, and water activities. These shoes are able to stand up to all the elements and look great on a casual movie night in jeans etc. We love ehm!!!

  • Amazing comfort and utility!

    February 21, 2018

I recently got a pair of Loyak Ms after a friend recommended them, and I am beyond impressed. I thought when I saw my friend wearing them that they just looked like a great casual shoe, and didnt expect them to fit so well (size 10, and my shoes range from 9-10 across brands), be so comfortable, and now I want to wear them all the time. Only problem is, my wife wont let me wear the blue ones with any black clothing, so Ill be quickly buying another pair. These are replacing a couple pairs of Pumas and Vans, and I wont go back. The grip is exactly as advertised. I wore them at the Baltimore Childrens museum, and where other Dads were slipping, I was solid chasing my kids in the wet areas and in the jungle gym.

Let me just say this right now, dear God, please buy this shoe. I refuse to take them off my feet. These shoes are so comfortable for everyday wear and, hell, I wear them out for most semi-formal events. Please just purchase right. now. I love this and I'm buying a pair as soon as I finish this. I've owned two pairs of these, and if it wasn't for an overexcited Grate Dane I would be wearing them right now

  • The best sea kayak shoe I've found

    February 20, 2018

I'm a year round sea kayak guide and have tried every possible shoe and sandal I could get my hands on. I've worn tevas, chaos, the fiveten eddy and a few of columbia's drainmakers and Astral's Loyak is the best and most comfortable kayak shoe I have found. I paddle a women's specific sea kayak that is very tight around my feet so sandals usually get caught on the outside of the kayak's foot pedals and I don't like loading and unloading with sandals. I wanted a shoe that was made specifically for kayaking and didn't care to much about the style but these also seem to be the best looking shoe due to the multiple comments I've recieved about them. All in all these are the best paddling shoe on the market and when they aren't wet and smelly I can wear them around town too.
My only problem with these shoes is they don't dry as fast as others and do get smelly. If these shoes dried quicker and smelled less I would end my search for the perfect kayaking shoe. I work in Colorado in the summer and they dry quicker there but in the winter I work in the Everglades and nothing seems to dry here!

  • Great service, Great Product

    February 05, 2018

I purchased the Loyak's for my boyfriend for Christmas and he LOVES them! They are insanely comfortable and definitely worth the price. The information on the site helped me to know exactly what to buy and is true to the product. The perfect gift for somebody who loves all things outdoors.

    February 01, 2018

Great shoe on and off the boat. Comfortable, light, with a lot of grip. SIZING - Runs Large - I usually wear 11.5 and I am comfortably an 11 in this shoe.

  • Fantastic materials, stylish design, highly recommend

    January 31, 2018

This shoe is really nice. I haven't worn it in the water yet but can already tell I'm going to love it. The weep ports are in well placed locations and small enough to prevent rocks from entering the shoe. This was my problem with Keens...too much debris getting into the shoe/sandal and making it uncomfortable. We're moving to Sydney and I can't wait to wear these from the water to the beach to the bar. I normally am a size 9.5 and I sized down per the recommendations on the site. They are really snug and a bit tough to get on, but I know they will stretch a little over time and I'm glad with the decision.

    January 31, 2018

I purchased these shoes for everything from whitewater rafting to sailing to exploring on land. It's a well-designed product (and packaging) with great features that allow for a wide variety of uses. Handsome shoe that is true to size and incredibly comfortable. • Great Shoe

    January 29, 2018

I bought this wanting an updated/ more technical "topsider" boat shoe, and it meets the bill. I wanted something that had a flat barefoot type sole, allowed me to wash it as I would stink from no socks summer wearing, could handle a day of exploring (city walking, canoeing, light hiking etc), and still look good with a collared shirt to get dinner or a drink at the end of the day. I have used this shoe for all of that and it shines. It is so light and packable I find I often pack it for travel. Again it looks great with shorts/ jeans and a button down, but I have used it as a workout shoe because it is that versatile (I have it in the light grey, white sole) Only thing I would say it I have not worn these all winter as the light thin sole, and so much mesh it would not be very warm. With the styling I sort of stop wearing them around 45-50 degrees F.

  • Don't want to take them off

    January 23, 2018

After reading all the reviews, I thought they may have been going a little overboard, but I just got them and seriously, I don't want to take them off. Super comfortable perfect fit and super grippy. I got these for a grand Canyon raft trip I'm going on in a couple of months, so I'll give an update on how they do, but I may wear them out before I ever go on the trip, maybe I just need to order another pair.

  • Best Shoes I've Ever Owned

    January 16, 2018

The Loyak is hands-down the most comfortable and versitile shoe I've ever owned. Impressively durable as well. I wore my first pair nearly every day for over a year of heavy use before the heels wore out.

    November 28, 2017

I just wanted to say how much I love the loyak. The womens loyak was out of my size so I took a gamble and got the smallest mens sizeIm so glad I did!! I love these shoes! I was at the climbing gym with my nephews and nieces the other day and did a little bouldering in my loyaksthey felt greatamazing grip and not bulky at all. I used to only slack line barefoot, but slacklining in my loyaks was a whole new experience. Just wanted to say that I love the shoes!!

  • Pretty much my favorite shoe ever

    November 22, 2017

I bought these over a year ago and I'm still wearing them regularly (even right now). They fit the bill of my perfect shoe for many reasons.
    1) Minimal design- They have pretty much a zero drop from heel to toe which for me is essential. They're also thin and super flexible while also being protective against rocks and other objects on the ground
    2) Wide toe box- although I don't have a wide foot I prefer wide forefoot shoes to allow my toes to spread out naturally which I find is great for comfort as well as foot health. These are very roomy in the toe box but not so much that I feel like my toes are swimming in them
    3) Style- I have definitely gotten many compliments on these shoes and I've worn them in a wide variety of situations (at work, at parties, ect)
    4) Versatility- I have worn these for so many activities, approaching to many cliffs to go climbing, swimming in streams, waterfalls, pools and oceans, to social gatherings, at work, and just hanging around the house. They rarely smell, even after wearing them for a week straight, and they dry very fast even when fully submerged and not rung out. Moreover, they grip really well in a variety of situations.

Overall, they're my favorite shoe I've ever owned and I sure hope Astral continues to make them. If not, I'll just stock up. I usually wear an 8.5 and from reading reviews I decided to buy an 8 and they fit just perfect!

Just buy them, you won't regret it if you've read my review and are looking for a shoe similar to what I've described.

    November 02, 2017

Awesome shoes! They fit as expected, but if your in between sizes, size down. They are very comfortable without socks and do not rub once wet. Wore them basically for two straight weeks hiking waterfalls and snorkeling on Maui and Kauai. Lightweight, great grip, fast drying, and they look and feel like regular shoes. A+ from Astral.

    September 19, 2017

I want to say 'thank you' for making a size 14 Astral shoe. I have a long, narrow, foot, and I prefer wearing the Loyaks instead of booties in tighter boats. The size 14s are true to fit and I have used them 3-days a week for the past few months with no issues. Perhaps this size may be visited on some of your other styles as well???

    August 14, 2017

Shoes are good for all situations. My only problem with them is I have to wash the mud off and let them dry before walking around town. I'm not quite sure how these wizards made shoes that resist stink like this, but I imagine it involves virgin blood. No other shoe Ive ever worn has come close to this. They found a life long customer in me through this shoe.

  • Most versatile, best new shoe purchase in a long while.

    August 04, 2017

I spend a ton of time in the woods--rivers, lakes, trails, etc. I bought these shoes with all intentions of wearing them for camping. But, as I decided to break them in a bit (which they didn't even need), I wore them to work. I got massive compliments on the style. Shortly after, I had an obligatory trip to Florida and Universal Studios with family. Not exactly the camping trip I was hoping to kick these off with, but they were the best shoes I could have worn. I brought three pairs of shoes with me--these, sandals, and a pair of shoes for dinnering, etc. I didn't even use the other two. I wore these for the entirety of the 4 day weekend.

Looking forward to rock hopping at the river and kicking through the lakes. These shoes are a must have. Comfortable. Supportive. Stylish. Versatile. They just make sense. They are the MacGyver of shoes. For real. They can probably disarm a bomb with a toothpick while cooking grilled cheese sandwiches using only a lighter and a staple gun. (I bought men's shoes because..well, I have big feet and I can. So there.)

  • First pair of astral Loyak

    July 07, 2017

It hasn't even been 48 hours and every chance I get to wear these, I take. This is the first pair of shoes in years that I don't want to take off. I'm a strength and conditioning coach/crossfit coach and I'm running around all the time. I love the outdoors so I when I heard about this shoe I decided to give it a shot. They're reasonably priced and made of some hardy material yet very light and still a minimalist shoe. This is definitely going to be my new go to shoe for every day adventure and they're still stylish. They need more colors with the gum bottom sole! These will not replace my nanos for workouts and/or lifting but if I'm in a jam I would definitely wear them. Great shoe!

    June 14, 2017

i bought these shoes about 2 months ago to replace my chacos and i havent taken them off since. I wear them around the city, to the bars, to work, you name it. They are insanely comfortable, you barely realize they are on your feet. They are light and airy, drain well and dry even better. The grip on wet rocks is better than that of my vibram soled chacos, and i like having my toes protected ( a hard learned lesson in my chacos). Will definitely buy a few other models from yall!

  • Unbelievably Robust

    May 30, 2017

I bought these as a low profile water shoe, but have ended up using them for almost everything. I wear these as a daily shoe around town, and also on hikes. I've hiked 16 miles in one day without issue wearing these, even explored caves with them. They hold up very well, and the fabric on the sides holds up well against volcanic jagged rock. The sole isn't that thick so you will feel some rocks through the button, but that is expected out of a low profile shoe. Great all around shoe that can take a beating, without sacrificing comfort.

    May 10, 2017

I own each color option of this shoe and they all look and feel great. First thing that attracted me to this shoe was design. Not only do they look great but they feel amazing. By far my favorite shoe that I have purchased. Great for casual wear and very durable for being active as well. Purchased first pair over a year ago, still wearing them today. • Durable play-boating shoes you can wear all day and keep foot-rot at bay

    February 06, 2017

After a year in these I'm impressed. on the durability and abrasion resistance of this super-light low, profile shoe. Playboating and especially my composite boat seams rub right through anything neoprene but these have held up strong. Add a second insole for daily wear on gravel or rough terrain, remove the insole completely and size down a bit for a more nimble fit into your playboat. In the age of drysuits with footies, I can wear these all year round and stay warm in winter while avoiding the foot-funk of summer season. Nice work, guys.

  • Best Shoe Period

    December 10, 2016

I've owned the Loyaks for a year and they have been awesome to say the least. They are extremely comfortable and versatile. As advertised they are low profile and what I would consider a minimalist shoe making them ideal for most activities. They look like "normal" shoes so I can wear them to my professional office job, paddleboarding in the ocean/marshes, and biking/walking/running on pavement and trails. And they still look great after a year of daily use....no issues at all. Astral, thanks for making such great footwear, and PLEASE do not stop making them!!!

Previously only ever seen wearing crocs, once I got a pair of the Loyak Navy/Brown, I was surprised to get compliments on my footwear for the first time ever! Now they are the only shoe I ever wear. Love how comfy they are, and after tromping through water to my local river run, I'm amazed at how quickly they dry and are ready to take to the streets by nightfall! Along with the Hiyak for more serious expeditions, they Loyaks are a must-have for any paddler!!!

  • Shockingly Good

    September 13, 2016

The Loyak is a rare fusion of performance and fashion. Although I think form should always follow function, I'm amazed at the quantity of positive comments I get on my mine! My response is typically, "they feel even better." Full disclosure: I sell these at a retailer in Asheville. Customers are attracted to its aesthetics, but then their reactions upon first wearing are on another level. They are simply amazed. Many don't even realize this is a foot-healthy shoe and that it has numerous benefits to the feet and body of the wearer. The Loyak is truly a special product.

    August 02, 2016

Grabbed a pair at U.S. National Whitewater Center. Tested the grip as a potential option for when using platform pedals and free riding on my Trek SuperFly. Not only did the do the job...they are PERFECT for platform pedaling through even the most challenging terrain. For those of us who dig platform pedals for biking, this shoe is not only a decent option, I personally think they are the next best thing. Move over VANS...the Loyak is the new shoe for mountain biking enthusiasts--amateur and pro alike. Add mountain biking to your list of outdoor activities and riders will be flocking to this shoe. July 19, 2016

Had these shoes for a few months now and put them through the ringer. Great fit out of the box that only seems to get better. Super versatile shoe that goes from bar to sandbar and back again. The grip on these is fantastic on pretty much every surface Ive encountered. Basically an extension of your foot. Any sediment you pick up along the way comes right out in the water and Im pleasantly surprised by the lack of funk--especially as I've lived in them the past few months. Great in the city; great on the trail; great in the water.

Summary: great everyday shoe (waterfalls, gym, short hike) breathable, minimalist design, grippy even when wet, durable, classic stylish look

I live in Hawaii wear it's very humid, so having something that can breathe is essential. I wear these shoes on the hike down on the rocks to the beach, then drive to the gym. They are an extension of my feet. Super grippy to skateboard with and grippy when they are wet on rocks. They give you the free feeling of being barefoot but the protection like shoes, very good feeling in the gym or just walking down the street.

  • Damn yeah!!!

    May 25, 2016

I noticed a Hong Kong Outward Bound Instructor paddling across Bass Strait (Australia) in a pair of these puppies and thought ... 'Yeah, I'd love a pair'.

So, I sent through an order and they arrived on my door step just before a sea kayak trip. They worked a treat - light-weight, tough, well-draining, great grip and they have a really good casual look. Though, as previously mentioned the sand does get in (proof being a couple of worn holes in my feet); however most paddling shoes do let the sand in! Would I recommend them ...YES! I wear them in the white-water boat as well as the sea kayak and they are great for sailing as well with their non-marking sole. And they will be my everyday shoe for my travels through Scotland and Norway later this year, due to their light-weight nature, casual look and with my usually stinky feet they are great as I haven't had any side-ways looks as yet. Definitely get yourself a pair!!!

    May 24, 2016

I purchased my first pair of Loyak M's at Brown's Shoes in Durango, Colorado. I have had nine foot surgeries and live with chronic horrible foot pain. I own well over one hundred pair of boots and shoes and have to change shoes every hour or two because my feet hurt so bad. Comfortable shoes are all I buy, and from the first second I put these shoes on I was amazed at how comfortable these shoes are. Zero break-in was required and Brown's Shoe Store in Durango, Colorado had my size in stock 13D and the fit was and still is perfect! Excellent pool or boat shoe or fishing shoe, climbing on wet rock shoe, or out on the town casual shoe. I love these shoes and will buy more in the future.

    May 04, 2016

This is my go to work shoe, my after work no-slip race shoe, my grippy hike to a waterfall shoe, my flexible bomb hills at 50mph+ skate shoe, my out on the town shoe. I have uneven growth plates on my feet, so I need a shoe that supports my foot very well. And for my everyday use this is a great shoe, for hikes longer than 2-3 hours I personally need a more supportive shoe. But for the average person you should be comfortable for 4-5 hours on the trail.Happy I found this company, love the products.

    April 03, 2016

I purchased a pair of these for knocking about and thought they were unlikely to smell up too fast. I am the bowman on our boat and rely on good footing. I ended up using them as deck shoes when I lost one of my regular deck shoes during a knock down. I will never use anything else on deck! They stick like glue, dry up quickly and protect perfectly. Well done Astral!

  • Loyak

    June 23, 2020

I do love these shoes but they wear out quite quickly. Ive had to stitch the top closed 3 different places already where Ive worn through the canvas. Its really more like mesh. Both shoes have worn considerably quickly and you can definitely tell which foot I brace with. They also have a great thin sole that contorts to your foot and wherever you jam it, be it raft or kayak.. but the trade off comes in long hikes on gravel or RR tracks. You feel Every pebble. Ive had them less than a season and they are pretty much destroyed. Still, I will undoubtedly buy another pair. They are super comfy after a long day in a raft and Im happy to support an NC based company. I do realize theyre made in Vietnam but still know that astrals ppl are socially conscious and always helpful. Now, if they only sold single shoes, I could just replace the left one....

  • For Your Feet's Greatest Feats!

    July 25, 2019

These shoes are like race tires for your feet. They just keep gripping and gripping like no other. Having worn barefoot shoes for a few years now I recently tried a new pair of trail hiking shoes and ended up returning them. Every shoe I tried felt like walking on marshmallows compared to these. The Loyak provides supreme stability and confidence. These shoes combined with (insoles removed) Birkenstock 3/4 Blue footbeds absolutely rock. The squishy rubber soles provide the perfect amount of cushion to take the edge off uneven terrain. If you prefer barefoot shoes you will appreciate this great design. The webbing on top is great for ventilation and keeps feet cool as possible. The reason I rated them four stars is because I would prefer the tread to be twice as high and more aggressive although that would probably alter the very refined look. If your a barefoot shoe enthusiast and seaking for a more refined athletic shoe I think you'll love these.

  • bare minimum street shoe / funk-resistant bootie

    March 05, 2016

Plenty of sensitivity to feel the rocks under your feet but just enough padding to run across hard-cut gravel or jump into knee-deep water. They run a bit Runs a bit narrow but order a snug fit for rafting and then remove the insole for play boating, pop it back in for town. A touch less flex than booties but you can be dry all morning, paddle all day, then set them in the sun for 5 minutes and before for the ride home. No neoprene clamminess!

  • Fantastic shoe

    October 07, 2021

I bought this shoe to wear in Minnesota's BWCAW, taking four of my kids on a 30-mile, 5-day trip in one very large Minnesota-4 Wenonah canoe this July 2021. We had a fantastic trip.

The shoes performed admirably on short and long portages, wet and dry. We went over significant rocky stretches, sometimes crossing rivers. Sometimes carrying 60 pound packs and the canoe. Sometimes 60 pound packs and a 60 pound child. Never slipped on wet rocks. Or anywhere for that matter. Apart from my campsite sandals, these were my only shoes. I loved them.

    Except for the blisters.

I don't normally need to wear wide shoes, and I'm a 10.5. So I got the 11s. By the third day, blisters on the inside knuckle of the big toe, both feet. Raw wounds, very painful by the final day. Not sure I can wear them again. And that's tragic, because they're great shoes.

If it weren't for the blister situation (even with a half size up from my normal shoes), these would be a 5-star shoe.

    Otherwise my hat's off!

  • Material not hydrophobic as advertised

    September 24, 2021

Just got back from a week long rafting trip with these. I like the fit, flexibility, sole material and general design. However the material is the opposite of hydrophobic. A drop of water is absorbed immediately, and it holds a lot of water. This means the shoes stay soaking wet all day. Is it possible their contract manufacturer is skipping a treatment step?

    December 22, 2020

Insanely comfortable shoe. Bought on a whim at the close out of a local store and literally havent taken them off. They have even replaced my nikes for my daily vigorous walk/jog. Then, why you ask, the low rating?

Well, I was manning the grill the other evening and by chance a errant ember landed on the upper of my astrals and wow...huge hole. They went up in flames. Be very, very careful around any fire or heat. Still wearing them but just a bit disappointed. A heads up. Ciao.

  • Can't even get my foot in

    July 25, 2020

I don't understand the good reviews here. I bought a pair of these in my normal size and when I received them I couldn't even put them on because the opening is too tight. I folded down the back put my foot in all the way, and can tell they would fit my feet if I could get them on. The issue is that the top of the opening has very little elasticity and barely stretches to allow you to put your foot in.

I'm giving 3 stars because they do seem like they would be comfortable if you could get them on.

  • Kinda disappointed

    January 31, 2020

I was really hoping to absolutely love these. I feel like they are great shoes, but the sizing is big and the toe box isnt that wide for shoes that advertise have room for toes to spread. I wear a 9 in everything but these I would definitely want an 8.5 BUT they dont make half sizes. I would try the 8 but I'd be worried the toe box would be smaller. These are wide enough that it doesnt squeeze my toes together but they dont have enough room for my toes to spread. I'm going to keep them and break them in. Maybe try to shrink them in the sun and hope I can get a good fit out of them. I was really hoping for something I loved right off the bat.

  • Tight Top

Just opened the box today and slipped them on...well almost, it took a lot of brute strength to get the first shoe on. I do not have what would be considered high arches; but the "stretch mesh tongue" does not really stretch at all and is the cause of my issues.

All that said, and because once I got them on they where one of the most comfortable boating shoes I have worn; I am going to keep them and hope that they stretch before the pull tabs rip.

  • Love them but...

    July 08, 2018

Love the fit, the feel, the looks, the compliments I receive, but the insole has a couple of sections with these little spikes that have left a nice little pattern of small scabby holes in my foot that feel like splinters. I would add a picture but it doesnt seem to be an option here. I suppose I will have to wear socks but that kind of defeats the purpose of water shoes.

  • Product hurts for walking. Seam bends inwards.

    May 03, 2019

Although this product is very attractive and functional, it has one major design flaw: the inner seam near the top of the foot at the base of the toe will bend inwards whenever the someone walks or flexes their toes, causing significant discomfort. In a situation where people are treading over rocks and heavily environments, I can imagine that such a design issue would cause a repetitive injury. I returned this product and am looking at other options such as the Astral Brewer and Astral Porter.
