  • Survived Grand Canyon

    September 12, 2021

The Brewer was an excellent choice. Held up well, provided grip on wet and dry rocks. My feet were comfortable all day and the shoes dried quickly. I also use them when riding flat pedals on my mtn bike .

  • Great shoe with some flaws

    June 14, 2021

I've owned three pairs of Brewers. The first pair were the best (bought 2014). The sole stayed attached through three years of hard boating. Loved the grip and most importantly, the wider sole that accommodated my wider, flat feet. My second pair of the older-style Brewers the sole came off after one trip to the river, and they were replaced with the newer 2.0 by Astral. The soles seemed better constructed this time around, but now they're too narrow. I found another used pair of the original Brewers and have worn them for a few years but now both those soles have detached. Wish I could get a wider 2.0 but it is what it is - a great river shoe with some flaws.

  • Just bought my second pair!

    February 26, 2021

Had these for a year and just bought my second pair! I didn't buy them because they need replacement, I did so because they are amazing and now I'll have more colors! Excellent wearing shoe and my go to for any activity. Even better that they are made local

  • Love my Brewers!

    December 15, 2020

I love everything about my Brewers. Great fit, awesome styling, and a fantastic color (I went with the Strom Navy). I've been mucking around in the rain and can hardly wait to get them on the river. These are my first pair of Astral shoes and I kick myself for not purchasing a pair A LONG TIME AGO.

  • The Brewer compared

    September 28, 2020

The Brewer 2.0 is my third Astral shoe behind previous purchases of the Loyak and the Hemp Donner. When compared, the Brewer seems to fit between the two. The Brewer sole seems a bit tougher than the Loyak to handle everyday wear but not quite as tough as the Donner. Generally speaking, I wear Donners for yard work, hiking rough terrain, gravel roads/trails, all year long. I wear the Brewers for Spring/Summer/Fall casual events where I might be in/around water or trail. I use the Loyaks exclusively for paddling and rafting. Overall, I like that the Brewer has the casual styling of a more traditional sneaker without sacrificing comfort or utility.

  • Left my Chacos in the dust...

    September 09, 2020

Wore these on a canoe race down the South Edisto in SC that had over 70 portages through swamps, over trees, and through the woods. I felt incredibly confident walking along wet logs and they never came off my feet even in shin deep mud (somehow they still look new). Brought my sandals on the trip and after 4 days on the river the only reason I touched them was to move them around in the boat. Im a diehard Chaco guy and will probably continue to wear them on casual paddles but any trip that will have me out of the boat on anything but sandy beaches I will be wearing the Brewers.

  • 6 months in review!

    August 26, 2020

OK, I admit that I ordered these having no idea what to expect, buying solely based on looks. I'm 6 months in to ownership and I felt I should at least report that they are holding up great and easily my favorite shoe. These shoes are extremely comfortable and lightweight. They breathe better than most of my other "trail running" shoes that I own, and they have been absolutely perfect for summer shoes. They look great! They are super easy to clean and don't wrinkle up when washed in warm water and mild soap. They dry quick. I wear them daily as my all purpose pair, and I'm going to buy a second pair so I can wear the older ones for working around the house and shop. There isn't a ton of arch support, so if you have high arches I'd consider an insole, but I wouldn't pass these up! Every time I put them on, I feel like I'm on vacation! Thank you Astral! Keep up the good work!

  • Rocks

    August 09, 2019

My first pair of Astrals but I'm imagining many more in my life. We live on a lake with a super rocky shoreline so these puppies are necessary to get in/out of the water. Then, once in the water they remain light enough you can easily swim in them.

    June 30, 2019

I have always worn my shoes for style over comfort. Since turning 50 and have picked up running and hiking I have started to by my shoes for comfort and shoes that are designed for specific activities. On day two with these shoes they feel great on my wide feet. I cant wait to get them out camping and in the river. Not to mention they look good with my summer clothes. Stylish and vey comfortable. Try a pair on youll love the feel instantly

  • Great Shoes

    April 20, 2019

I have been using the Brewer 2.0 for almost a year now and I really like them. They are great shoes for use on the water or just kicking around. The no rise design is comfortable for long wear regardless if you are walking or standing. The soles provide excellent traction in wet or dry conditions. While on the water, the Brewers drain water and dry quickly. If you are looking for a paddling shoe, I highly recommend the Brewer 2.0s.

  • Best Water Shoes

    March 25, 2019

I have had a lot of water sandals and shoes and the Astral Brewer 2.0 are the best I have had. Very comfortable right out of the box and are good for land and sea. My feet get very sore and hot in socks and shoes, but i am unable to go barefoot most of the time and realistically need the support that shoes offer. I can wear the Brewer 2.0 comfortably without socks, they are very breathable and i can wear them all day without my feet hurting or getting too hot. I am so impressed with these shoes that I will be purchasing another pair for hiking.

  • Brewing Brewer

    January 12, 2019

This is my second Astral shoes in a month after the Hemp Donner and I love them both! The brewer is very light sneakers, looks tight and it does not slip. I was surprised with the performance of this shoes walking on wet tiles in the mall because of the rain. I was worried at first since I'd be walking around the mall with wet shoes but it dried on its own haha
    Recommend this shoes? SUPER!!! HIGHLY!!!

    December 04, 2018

I purchased the Brewer 2.0 primarily for use while whitewater kayaking. Since then I've also worn them as a casual warm weather shoe and for travel in the tropics. Very comfortable, versatile and they look great as well.

  • bought to wear at the gym

    December 01, 2018

My story starts after Labor Day - wanted a pair of water shoes while we were up in Maine, even LL Bean didn't have any in stock at the store. After we returned home I went to the LL Bean website and found Loyak M's - I bought a pair and immediately fell in love with them, wore them "out and about", to the gym etc. I looked up Astral Shoes and liked the fact that the shoes were made in NC. I ordered the Brewers and got them this week, walked about the neighborhood, wore them to the gym - they are fantastic! comfortable right out of the box. I will be buying additional shoes from Astral for out & about (thinking about the hemp shoes....)

  • Great sailing shoe

    August 26, 2018

I have sailed for years and had many sailing shoes, mostly the traditional standard Sperry Topsiders, My son, a river guide and avid kayaker, recommended Asrtrals. The Brewer 2.0 is the best sailing/boating shoe I have ever had - so comfortable, and great grip/traction. I love them!! You should actively market to the sailing/boating world.

  • Favorite River shoe of all time!

    August 06, 2018

Light, tight, sticky, durable, and stylish, what more do I need to say. I have been abusing the Brewers for a few years now on and off the water and I have to say, I can't find a better shoe. Besides being a great option for kayaking, river surfing, rafting, and all around river playing, I have been wearing them while I skate, onewheel, and just run around the mountains. The upgrades to the 2.0 are great...a little softer(more comfortable) and the durability factor has increased as well for those who need a shoe you can beat to living hell.

  • The Astral Brewer 2.0 is a one shoe quiver.

    July 31, 2018

The Brewer 2,0 is an incredibly high-performance kayaking shoe with understated good looks that effortlessly flows from upstream, to flat water to downtown, and many adventures in between. Kayaking gear, possibly more than any other outdoor gear, gets punished and pushed to the limits regularly. Paddling gear must perform well in constant wet, slick, muddy, slog fests. Kayaking shoes are an integral part of kayaking gear. They are the one piece of equipment constantly being used as much in the boat as out of it. Whether providing a stable platform inside the boat to assist with steering and control to providing grip, comfort, and support during a portage or rescue, kayaking shoes must do it all at a moments notice. These new Astral Brewers thrive in these types of environments and still clean up nice for after paddling lifestyle. My favorite aspect of the Brewer 2.0 is they remind me of an old friend. You can really rely on them to be there for you. They have your back in bad situations, and dont mind hanging out with you in more casual settings. They have literally become my everyday shoe. They are out of the box comfortable. No break in time needed.

  • Brewer 2.0 Looks as good as it performs

    July 29, 2018

This is my third pair of Astrals and love their shoes. I also own two of Astral's PFD's and would not wear anything else. This time, I went with the Brewer 2.0 for its good looking casual vibe. fit is true to size and I like the minimalist feel. I use my Astrals for whitewater kayaking, whitewater SUP, and fly fishing. They have always performed as stated and better. I could never go back to wetsuit booties while on the water. This time I chose the Brewer 2.0 so I could wear to work and around town. I like the fact that you truly can wear these on the water during the day and go out on the town at night. I highly recommend these shoes along with Astral's other great gear. Thanks Astral.

  • Most excellent

    May 28, 2018

Ive been using the original brewers for years, both for whitewater and just everyday casual use. When I heard about the version 2.0 I thought how?, why?, the OG Brewer is already the perfect shoe right? Wow, Im so impressed with Astral. The updates and improvements from the original are so church. If youre into any type of water sports, from yachts to gnar, and you are looking for the most versatile, do everything shoe to compliment your awesome outdoor lifestyle then look no further. This is the shoe you want.

  • Excellent all-arounder

    May 28, 2018

I've been using the Brewers for about 3 years now, in various water-related environments: a few two-week long sailing trips, many whitewater rafting multi-day trips, SUP paddling on lakes and rivers. They are very comfortable to wear, water drains out of them quickly. Good foot support, no slop when wet and the lacing doesn't have to be super tight. The sole is sticky, which was important to me especially on the sailing trips and hiking on sandstone. They're comfortable enough that I use them for my everyday shoe as well, and have been known to do some mountain biking in them. The first version did come apart on me from heavy use, and Astral replaced them with a V2 shoe. I've taken the V2 on a few day rafting trips and am very pleased with them. Improved stitching, even better fit, and need I say excellent customer service.

  • Perfect all-around water shoe

    May 24, 2018

This is a great shoe, with tactile and visible quality in design and construction. It's going to be perfect for all-day wear around rivers, lakes, ponds and a lot of in-and-out of water activity. I'm in Colorado and do a fair mix of alpine lake and reservoir canoeing which usually involves a bit of portage underneath a heavy 17' Alumacraft. I'd been looking for something that's not a sandal that could stand up to the wear and tear and be appropriate to wear all day, this shoe is it!

  • Size 14!!!!!!!!!!!

    May 11, 2018

Thank you folks for continuing to expand some of your lineup with a 14 size. I never had a pair of the original Brewers due to lack of a size that fit me. Last year you expanded the Loyaks to include size 14 and now the Brewer 2.0. I bought a pair as soon as I saw the new size option. A big 'thank you' from a tall, skinny dude! I've enjoyed them so far and they appear to be well made.

This shoes has all but replaced my boat shoes/wading shoe when I am in my drift boat. I love how lightweaight and versatile it is on and off the river. I can fish all day in the shoe and stay comforable. I love the G rubber bottom, it provide a TON of traction while wading/fishing.

  • Perfect Water Shoes

    May 07, 2018

Purchased early March 2018. Shoes have over 200 miles on them. Have used hiking up mountain streams, and stomping around salt marshes. Grip is unreal, dries fairly quickly, super comfortable and durable. The shoe did seem to run a bit small for me. Only issue I have is odor. I used the original Brewers quite a bit, but did not have this issue. Could just be my feet! Regardless, 5 out of 5.

    May 04, 2018

Took these out on a river day today and these were amazing - great grip, quick drying, super comfortable, and really stylish too! Cant wait for a full summer of water activities and these are definitely coming with me on every camping trip from now on because they are so light and packable. Im a very satisfied customer and looking at other Astral products now!

  • All Purpose Shoe

    May 03, 2018

I bought the Brewer 2.0 to wear sailing, sea kayaking, and SUP touring. It also looks good enough that I wear it to the office and its my go to casual shoe for the summer.

    About the shoe:
The toe box is very wide and comfortable, but the heal cup is snug and secure.

It has a very minimalist construction, no padding, and little cushioning. This makes it a good fast drying water shoe, but probably not great as a light hiker. It also makes the shoe very lightweight and packable, great for travel.

The shoe is super breathable. No more hot, sweaty feet.

The rubber is amazing. You cannot shuffle your feet if you try, the sole grips instantly. Great sailing shoe.

  • Ocean racer proven!

    February 18, 2018

I have about 12,000 miles of open ocean racing on these brewers! They have not barely shown any signs of wear and tear. I do have to wear insoles with them cause I have a high arch but I do in all my shoes. Any sailboat racer knows of the odors produced by certain materials while racing but these kept clean , dry and pretty odorless. They are super comphy and just spent the week in Costa Rica hiking and wearing them all over. Love these shoes, zero complaints. Im a total gearhead and these are well built , thought out shoes.

  • Great shoes in general but heel too low

    June 19, 2021

On my second pair of astrals. Loved the first and they lasted through plenty of use and abuse kayaking.
My second pair, brewer 2 however, the heel is too low and slides off very easily, and this is without wearing thick socks. It's a constant annoyance padding. Besides that for comfort and reliability it's a great shoe.

  • So far so good

    July 16, 2019

I bought the Brewer 2.0 four or five weeks ago and have enjoyed them. I wore them during a tubing trip in a stream and also this past weekend wore them on an inshore salt water trip. They work really well as far as the technical aspect goes but when I wore them with no socks a for the first time this past weekend, they didnt hesitate to hold that smell. Hosed them off last night in the backyard and they still have the odor (though Ill say after I soaked them with the hose, they were dry shortly after). I really dig these shoes and will buy them again but question some of the reviews. Seem a bit fabricated.

  • A pretty good shoe for water sports and limited hiking

    August 19, 2018

I have been using this shoe for about 4 months, mostly for sea kayaking in the Texas Gulf Coast. I also wore it for a raft trip on the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon, where I wore it on a number of side-canyon hikes. So far it has held up well for kayaking. It is not bulky so fits well inside a sea kayak. The drain holes are great for getting water out fast, and the material of the shoe dries pretty fast, at least in dry climates. Grit does not get in. The soles grip well when walking on wet rocks. It has a fairly light (though strong) construction (to avoid bulk, I suppose), so is not good for all day hiking. It was fine for hikes of several hours. In an emergency I think I could hike out wearing them, but would prefer stouter shoes. I wear them with no socks, but rarely experience chaffing. You have to make sure the tongue and material around lacing does not fold over when you put it on. Overall, I am happy with this shoe so far.

  • Nice

    July 02, 2018

Very well made and comfortable right out of the box. Hiked in these barefoot with no hotspots. Design dosnt let sand and rocks in when swimming but drainage was excellent and drying time was good. As mentioned by many people the shoe runs small and I would like to see a toe bumper or a bit more protection up front. All in all a very well made, well designed water shoe.

  • Good for Awhile Then...

    April 04, 2021

No sure why but these shoes I use for kayaking (kayaking, carrying my kayak) and for rafting somehow deformed inside (the cloth) by the heel and sides of the heel. To the point my heel no longer 'sucks into' this space and the shoes come off too easily. I always feel like they are about to come off. Which of course on a Class IV swim, or any swim in the Grand Canyon I'd prefer to keep my shoes on. Not to mention I don't normally bring a back-up pair. And I think the support structure has been compromised so carrying my kayak I have to be extra careful. I'm sending them back / will see what Astral says. But I'm going back to the Rassler no matter what they say.

  • Best you can get (since FiveTen is gone).

    July 27, 2020

Astral river shoes are pretty good. Their stitching will fall apart if you're an avid boater. I've repaired mine with glue, duct tape, and fishing string a couple of times. FiveTen water tennies are by far superior with quality and grip. Unfortunately, they no longer produce river shoes. But, if you scour the interwebs, you can find them - hopefully in your size. This past week I bought three pairs of FiveTen's Water Tennies I found online to keep me going for a handful of years. But, Astrals are a quality brand if you take care of them.

  • Comfortable but Durability in Question

    January 21, 2020

The shoes are not bad- comfort is good, lightweight. However, the sole has started to detach from one of the shoes on the front. I have attempted to use Gear Aid to repair the issue a couple of times, with so-so results. In summary, durability should more robust, especially since these were only used casually. If durability were not an issue I would definitely recommend these shoes.

  • Great Shoe, not a fan of the new rubber

    September 05, 2018

I've been wearing these for about 5 years now and use them so frequently that I usually go through a pair or more a year. Astral has always been great about standing behind their product in regards to warranty issues if they wear our too early. I bought a new pair of Brewer 2.0's last month with the new G15 rubber. There seems to be some improvement in the construction of the shoe but I feel a lot less sure footed while hopping out of my boat to scout and have busted my butt several times in places that I would have normally hopped around without thinking about it. I have also polled several friends about the new rubber and the consensus seems to be the same. Bring back the old rubber or something better!

  • Doesn't dry quick, and interior stiching causes blisters

    September 29, 2021

I recently took these shoes on a 4 day portaging trip in hopes that they could get wet and within a few hours of drying they would be suitable to wear at night.. Unfortunately this is not the case as they took over 16 hours to completely dry. Further, since this a water shoe and meant to be worn without socks, their is interior stitching which can irritate the feet and lead to blisters, which it did to my left toe, so much so that it bled through the shoe.

  • Bummer

    May 23, 2021

Like the look and theyre pretty comfortable but they started falling apart after very minimal wear. Poorly made in a foreign country with inferior materials. Definitely better options out there.

  • Fall apart

    August 30, 2020

Loyaks, Hiyaks are awesome. Brewers fall apart. The soles decouple from the body of the shoe. With loyaks, the shoe is sewn on to the rubber sole. With Brewers, it is glued. With frequent immersion in water (which is what these shoes are for) they come apart. Have owned two pairs and seen this many times with other kayakers. Astral has a great warranty, but so what if the products fail in the field. These need to be redesigned with similar construction to loyaks. BTW my family owns Astral blue jackets, several Otters, a Layla, and several pairs on Loyaks; I am not an Astral hater, but the poor quality of he Brewer makes me question their commitment to quality broadly.

  • Not true to size

    July 02, 2020

Not even close in the true to size department.
Astral deleted my 1st review on this site, so Ive placed other reviews on their dealers sites.
After being assured by customer service that these shoes are true to size, I ordered a size 12 for my 11.5 size feet. My toes were jammed to the end in the toe box. Now it cost me over $22.00 for return shipping for shoes that are no good to me.

  • Don't trust these people

    June 26, 2020

During our lengthy conversation, you folks told me that thers shoes are "true to size". That's absolutely inaccurate. I wear a US size 11.5 so upon your instructions, I ordered a size 12 to leave room for a light water sock. When I tried these shoes on with a light weight cotton sock, they are way too small. My toes are jammed against the end of the shoe. THANKS FOR NOTHING! You people have cost me money that I should not have to spend, by shipping your junk back to you.
